President Trump called on a host of other countries, including Britain, France, and China, to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to end a de facto Iranian blockade on the shipping of oil through the strategic waterway. It was far from clear, however, whether any countries would volunteer to patrol the strait, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil transits.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said on Telegram that the strait “is open to everyone, except American ships and those of its allies.” In practice, however, the oil shipped through the passage is coming from either Iran or American allies such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Oil prices have risen steeply since the United States and Israel launched their air war on Iran on Feb. 28. While the Trump administration and other governments have sought to calm the volatility and bring prices down — including by easing sanctions on some Russian oil — they have seen little success thus far.
Mr. Trump threatened to attack oil infrastructure on Kharg Island, home to Iran’s main oil export terminal, unless Tehran allowed ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Such a move would almost certainly rattle energy markets further. U.S. consumers have already seen the price of a gallon of gasoline rise by 25 percent on average, according to the AAA motor club.
On Saturday, Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps rejected Mr. Trump’s threat, asserting in a statement that the critical waterway was under its full control and that “any attempt to move or transit will be targeted.”

I was hoping there was going to be a thread on this because I just looked at Flightradar24 and it looks like every Stratotanker we have is flying over the middle east right now. We must be bombing the hell out them.

Trump has some really terrible advisors right now. He now realizes the strait is NOT open but who mislead him on the 10th when he told ships to go through?
Susie Wiles, Paula White...
I read somewhere that the French have sent a carrier there. I’d think most of the European countries would put at least a token force there, as it’s in their interest to keep the strait open.
“ I’m highly skeptical that any other nation will sending warships. What’s in it for them?”
____________
Oil.

Why steal our thunder?
Is a French or Indian frigate more powerful than a US guided missile cruiser?
If we wanted allies, we should have enlisted them before the hostilities commenced.
The Charles de Gaulle was sent to the Mediterranean at the beginning of the war.
Aircraft carriers cannot transit the Suez Canal.
It is in everyones interest BUT ours to keep it open! We are a net oil exporter!
which means we produce more than we need. All we have to do it stop exporting and our gas prices will go down.
Us guarding the straight is the same old BS, the US taxpayer paying to police the world. If the world wants the straight open and safe they need to do something about it not us
Remember this next time somebody says Trump is the one not committed to our allies:
“It was far from clear, however, whether any countries would volunteer to patrol the strait, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil transits.”
B.S. Aircraft Carriers transit the Suez all.the time.

He needs to take out the defenses on the island, but leave the oil infrastructure intact. The reason: if the people revolt, which they are more likely to do if they know they have a source of funds for the revolt, they need the oil revenues to keep the new gov’t in power.
Oil is a commodity traded on the global market. Prices at American pumps will be higher than before the war.
Higher fuel prices mean higher prices for everything shipped by plane, train, ship or truck.
And it’s not just crude oil that that was shipped out of the Strait. It accounted for around 35% of the world’s LNG, which our NATO allies in Europe heavily depended on.
There is much talk about 20% of the world’s oil coming through the Strait before the war, but not so much about 30-35% of fertilizer components. Fertilizer prices have already spiked here in the US:
Aircraft carriers cannot transit the Suez Canal.
Not sure about the French but our carriers certainly can. The Ford just trasitied through last week.
