Variety Skips Communist Angle in Netflix Series on Mexican Artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo

A founder of the Mexican Communist party. Does that sound like someone for whom politics in general was incidental and communism in particular was just a passing fad?

Of course not, but that is how Mexican muralist Diego Rivera is often depicted in the media. As for his sometime wife and lover, Frida Kahlo, she was even more fanatic in her devotion to communism. She was not only a party member, but a staunch Stalinist as well. And yet it appears that the their communist connection which was at the core of their beings as well as their art, as the Diego Rivera painting on this page reveals, could be whitewashed out of their media portrayals yet again. The evidence for this comes from a Variety story on Thursday by Anna Marie De La Fuente, "Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera Netflix Series in the Works."

The closest Variety comes to mentioning their communism comes in this brief observation in passing: "The still untitled show will delve into their lives and explore how shifting political, social, and artistic upheavals shaped their relationship and oeuvre."

Both Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were diehard COMMUNISTS but almost all media coverage of them downplay that fact almost entirely as the 2002 film "Frida" did. Although they both flirted (supposedly) with Trotskyism they both ended up as fanatic Stalanists. Many suspect that Frida Kahlo was boffing Trostsky only as a way to get information as to the best way for the Stalinists to assassinate him.

A very weird thing but once I was in a situation where I was able to stare in person for hours and hours daily at a very large Diego Mural for hours over the course of about 2 months. Very fascinating stuff but that mural left no doubt that Diego Rivera was a full on Communist.

Mexican historian Juan Miguel Zunzunegi has accused Diego Rivera of distorting history in his murals in a way to make Mexicans ashamed of their Spanish heritage. Namely about Cortez and the Aztecs. The fact was that most of the native peoples in that area were horribly oppressed by the Aztecs (like who enjoys getting their hearts cut out of their chests while alive) and looked upon Cortez as their savior and served as his allies against the oppressive Aztecs.

I always thought Kahlo was a Trotskyite, but as you suggest she might have been a honey pot double agent--a very strange form of honey, to be sure, not one that even Swalwell would hit. She was just old enough to avoid Maoism and Castroism.

Despite knowing his communist background, the Rockefeller family were patrons of the arts so they hired Diego Rivera to create murals for the inside of Rockefeller Center in the 1930s. Rivera worked in secrecy and then the murals were unveiled which showed people who looked an awful lot like leading members of the Rockefeller family beating and cheating workers. Oddly, Rivera’s mural was wiped out before it ever became public. Kahlo, another deep Red, was hired by a wealthy family whose daughter jumped out a window when she was rejected by a married FDR aide. Kahlo unveiled the painting, which showed this young lady flying out the window of a skyscraper. You cannot trust communists.

If you could work "hours" in there just one more time you might win a monkey puppet.

The Obamas are heavily invested in Netflix.

The primary mission of Netflix is DEI-WOKE ideology.

The secondary focus is special-effects “ entertainment “.

Is it true Frida slept with a portrait of Stalin next to her bed?

Kahlo and Rivera hosted Trotsky while he was in exile in Mexico City. By the time of his murder Kahlo had become a loyal Stalinist, and of course Stalin is the one who wanted Trotsky killed. She was found innocent but who knows. Commies.

Rivera’s paintings tend to be in the stolid “Social Realism” style that only Stalin could love. Though his depiction of the human form owes much to The Family Circus cartoons (or vice versa), his work is at least consistent with his politics.

How to reconcile Kahlo’s ardent communism with her work, mostly self-portraits plus some depictions of witchcraft and magic, all of it idiosyncratic, is a poser. It’s interesting how different the two painters were.

Why?! Their lives were already covered in the movie Frida. And the movie made no attempt to hide the fact that they were rabid commies. On a plus side, Salma Hayek gets nekkid too.

And more accurately, it is Netflix that is heavily invested in the Obamas. Why?! For all their movie production experience?!

Salma Hayek is a heck of a lot better looking than Frida Kahlo, but who’d want to watch a movie about Frida starring someone who actually resembled her?
