A Corpus Christi woman who sued a local Marine pilot, claiming he spiked her hot chocolate with abortion pills and killed their unborn child, is now facing a $1.1 billion counter suit.
The original lawsuit was filed Aug. 11, 2025, at the federal courthouse in downtown Corpus Christi and made national headlines. It named NAS-Corpus Christi Marine pilot Christopher Cooprider, accusing him of secretly dissolving abortion pills into his pregnant neighbor's hot cocoa, ending the life of their unborn child.
Cooprider is being represented by high-profile attorney Mikal Watts, who is taking on the case for free and seeking over $1 billion in damages. Watts held a press conference on September 5th, announcing the counter suit.
"And so we made a pact, I'm working for free. He's agreed to donate anything collected from this lawsuit to the Wounded Warriors Project so that nobody can argue this is about money," Watts said.
Cooprider, speaking at the press conference, saying a few words.
"Good morning, everyone. I have one thing to say today, and that is that I absolutely did not do any of the allegations that were filed against me in the suit," Cooprider said.

Is this the lawyer from Seinfeld?
No. He said “I’m working for free”. :)
If only people respected marriage vows...
Having read the article, and just going by what Cooprider (the guy) actually admits to doing, I am reminded of a quote by Henry Kissinger regarding the Iran-Iraq war “It’s a pity both sides can’t lose”.
I urge my FRiends once again not to fall for lawsuit hype.
In CA, the Code of Civil Procedure doesn’t really lend itself to politicization, so the Legislature hasn’t gotten around to wrecking it like they have lots of other areas of law, such as the Family Code and Penal Code. My analysis is based on CA law, but since the author doesn’t bother to tell anything about the countersuit, I might as well. TX law may vary
First, what is the countersuit for? If it’s for defamation, the contents of the lawsuit itself are privileged. Most likely it’s malicious prosecution, but one of the elements is that you need to beat the first lawsuit. The nature of the claim is critical, but there’s not a word said about it
For purposes of this discussion I’ll assume her claims against him are false. What are his damages? The article doesn’t recount anything that happened to him such as discharge from the military. No doubt he suffered significant damages to his reputation, but you need to be able to link that to actual numbers
In CA you’re not even allowed to state the amount of damages, just whether it’s under or over $25K. If her claims are false then it would be a proper case for punitive damages, but under SCOTUS precedent, punitive damages must not exceed about 9-10X the actual damages. Remember that these price tags that lawyers slap on these cases are for publicity only and typically don’t bear any relationship to actual recoverable damages
As usual with legal matters, this news coverage is uninformative and essentially useless in understanding what it actually going on
It’s Outrageous! Egregious! Preposterous!
So very true....
Or more simply put, there are three categories, Keepers, Sleepers and Sweepers.
