BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A woman who was arrested by the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation accused of defrauding an insurance company out of thousands of dollars is an employee for the State Senate.
Spokeswoman Julie Baxter declined to comment on her status - only saying, “this is an internal personnel matter.”
Sarai Stansberry was arrested in New Orleans.
Sarai Stansberry and Rhashiedi Porter are both facing charges as part of the investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.
The investigation began after agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation received a criminal referral from the Louisiana Department of Insurance regarding allegations of insurance fraud.
Investigators said they learned the couple allegedly claimed during sworn testimony that they suffered injuries during a crash in a parking lot. According to the AG’s office, the two suspects said they required more than five months of medical treatment because of what happened.
Officials said the couple also filed a fraudulent insurance claim regarding the crash.
Surveillance video obtained by an insurance company reportedly showed the two suspects were not inside the car during the crash, investigators explained. They added that the couple voluntarily dismissed a lawsuit after the surveillance video was disclosed.
Agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation secured video footage and other evidence as part of their investigation. The agents were able to confirm the couple had filed a false claim to defraud the insurance company out of about $30,000, officials said.
Arrest warrants were obtained for the suspects. They were taken into custody in the New Orleans area and were booked into the Orleans Parish Jail on charges of insurance fraud, perjury, false swearing, and filing false public records.
