JUST IN: Trump Set to Endorse In Bruising Texas Senate Primary, Wants Other Candidate to ‘DROP OUT OF THE RACE!’

President Donald Trump teased an endorsement in Texas’s bruising GOP Senate primary on social media Wednesday, saying he will soon pick a candidate and asking the other to “DROP OUT OF THE RACE.”

On Tuesday night, the GOP primary between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) resulted in a run-off.

“The Republican Primary Race for the United States Senate in the Great State of Texas, a State I LOVE and won 3 times in Record Numbers (the HIGHEST vote ever recorded, by far!!!), cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer. IT MUST STOP NOW!” Trump posted to Truth Social, adding:

We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively! Both John and Ken ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT! My Endorsements within the Republican Party have been virtually insurmountable! It is such an honor to realize and say that almost everyone I Endorse WINS, and wins by a lot, especially in Texas! I will be making my Endorsement soon, and will be asking the candidate that I don’t Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE! Is that fair? We must win in November!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

The Atlantic’s Michael Scherer and Ashley Parker reported just before Trump’s post that the president is “expected” to endorse Sen. Cornyn following “following the incumbent’s better-than-expected finish.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) also signaled optimism that Trump will back his pick in the race – Cornyn. Thune told Punchbowl News on Wednesday that Trump’s endorsement “saves everybody a lot of money” and that “If the president can weigh in, it would make it enormously helpful.”

Thune tells me Cornyn “had a great night” and that an early Trump endorsement in the runoff “saves everybody a lot of money.”

“If the president can weigh in, it would make it enormously helpful” ahead of what will be a brutal runoff campaign

I can't prove it, but I wonder if Hunt was paid off because he had high NICU bills from his son's premature birth and his wife's difficult delivery?

Hunt was in a safe Republican district in Montgomery County, running along Hwy-290 from Tomball to Jersey City. Why would he give up that safe seat to run for the Senate against two heavyweight candidates that he had no business entering at such a young career, unless to be a spoiler for Cornyn?

Let's see whom Hunt endorses now.

Cornyn??? Seriously??? The only time he came alive is when he saw his chances of getting relelected slipping away. The GOP wasted almost 60 million dollars to fund a campaign , that will only see a run off. That in self is criminal!

I could live with a Trump endorsement of Cornyn if he tells Thune that he must push to pass the SAFE Act and call for a real recess of the Senate so that Trump can make recess appointments as payment for an endorsement. Then Trump can fire Pam Bondi and make an interim appointment of Paxton as U.S. Attorney General.

TEXAS SENATE RACE: If Trump endorses Cornyn it will cost him and the GOP dearly. Cornyn claimed Trump led an insurrection and praised Biden’s approach to border security. Don’t do it Mr. President. pic.twitter.com/CL42r0L7Bz— @amuse (@amuse) March 4, 2026

ANY endorsement of Cornhole, which should not in a sensible world happen, should come AFTER all that you have listed.

That would be the actual ART of any deal.

Guaranteed he will pick Cornyn. His track record with endorsements is terrible.

” agree, but as I have for the since post-Reagan era. I will hold my nose and vote for whoever runs against the Talcrapo guy as I did for both Bushes and McStain.”

I understand the rationale, and I don’t fault you for it.

I literally can’t vote for the guy.

He is the least honorable person I’ve ever met. Absolute garbage human.

Trump always gets screwed in endorsing RINOs. Tim Scott, Thune, Romeny etc.

But as everyone says, at least if the other candidate drops out, and you don’t vote your checking the box for the Democrat.

Wow, that is why you never fund the NRSC or the equivalent for the House.

They spend only on helping incumbents in both primaries and final races.

And they spend CRAZY amounts.

The runoff is on May 26th, so there is a two and a half month window to get Thune to twist a few GOP arms to pass the SAFE Act and to really have the Senate recess, as was done for Biden, Obama, and other Presidents.

I really wish he would endorse Paxton.

Cornyn is not a true base supporter.

I honestly think Cornyn might lose the run off in May even with a Trump endorsement. As Texans we know how wish washy Cornyn is. Paxton is true red conservative.

An interesting angle that any administration officials looking at this thread should consider:

If Ted Cruz is appointed to the Supreme Court— a high possibility, it might be possible to tell the loser of this appointment that Abbott will appoint you to the remaining Cruz term. The might mollify all parties.

This would require a conversation with Governor Abbott but I think that deal could probably be struck.

He needs to endorse Paxton. Yes, it will piss the RINOs off. Too bad. The way you break their grip on power is by removing them.

Bag Cornyn. Bag Cassidy. We already took care of Tillis. The Turtle will be out soon. That’s certainly not all of them, but that’s a big chunk of the worst of the worst gone from the Senate. That needs to be our top priority this election cycle.

Thune has asked Trump to endorse Cirnyn “Early”. If Trump does this it will be a bad idea. Many in TX dislike Cornyn and will not vote for him against the Democrat who will end up winning. If Thune guarantees to find a way to pass the Save Act for Trumpthe endorsement will be guaranteed. I think Paxton is the better man for this job. Hope he gets it but not optimistic.

.... tells me he cares more about the establishment than for true conservatives....

But if those “true conservatives” cant get elected in the general, than what? Still vote for them? What if the other guy could? Then what?

Certainly not a senate seat we want to lose.

I read that over 30% of Texas Republicans said they would not vote for Cornyn in November if he is the candidate.
