Alcohol is a source of energy and is safe for hydratation in times and places where water born diseases are ubiquitous. Entire civilisations have been built with routine or even ritual alcohol consumption. No such thing with cannabis or other psychoactive substances.
Comparing alcohol to cannabis is nonsensical. And I say it as an impartial non user of both.

Little correction.
During the crusader era, The Old Man from the Mountain, religious leader of the assassin sect, was doping his followers with hashish. They were so doped up, they jumped of the cliff to their death, when asked.
He used them to murder his enemies. As they were wasted, they did not care, if they were caught!
From the Hashish use, they were called Assassins.

So yes, hashish was used in this religion, to the total detriment of the followers.
