As for having more to give he could work part time at Trader Joe's and be a guidance counselor to all the young workers who need help with their direction in life. I've never taken that step-no need to. Then there's walking the dogs at the animal shelter-positive feedback. It's uncharted waters but no one wants to turn back.
There’s more. The title of this article is “Getting Old Sucks”

It would be interesting in seeing the correlation between watching CNN and suicide.
Lol.
Yes, watching CNN is the first mistake. 😉
that’s funny.
Sounds like he’s looking at retirement life in the same way as he did his work life. That’s a mistake. Things like “I Don’t Know Who I Am Without The Title” just sound silly. He’s overthinking it. Maybe one of those people has to have structure, and without it he doesn’t know how to just live life.
I’m happier now than I’ve ever been before in my life (just shy of 70 now). I have friends that I’ve accrued over the years. We stay in touch via email & phone. I have friends from a Bible study I go to, the gym I go to & the humane society where I volunteer. I have my own pets who keep me up & busy with their care. Anyone who sits at home watching CNN has no imagination.
An older friend is now retired and has CNN on her TV ALL THE TIME.
this, and not being around co-workers or in general society as much has made her into an insufferable leftist. Her Facebook posts are now all TDS, and she barks out all the political themes-of-the-day which the DNC and CNN are promoting, going from covid propaganda, to now anti-ICE
I’ve told her she needs to step outside of herself and her habits, and look objectively at this, but its not working
She was once fun and light-hearted and easy to be around, but now I can’t stand it so I avoid contact.
Starting my fifth year of retirement. I do what i want when i want. My three kids are very close. 8 grandkids. I spend much time at the rifle and pistol range, shoot a little sporting clays. Walk the Lake Michigan beach some. Bicycle, hike. I don’t like travel, i like to wake up in my own bed. Do my own yardwork and home repairs. Life has never been so good.
Anything in my life that I’m not comfortable with is the result of MY actions. And turn off the TV.
Step one: Get out of the house. Every day.
Keep repeating step one until step two appears.
It sounds like he has no hobbies or passions.
Everyone is different—and what fascinates one person is irrelevant to others.
The first thing I did when I retired would sound silly to most folks.
I am a cigar smoker—but I had a job where I could not risk getting in legal trouble—so maybe I was overcautious but I did not indulge my great dream—collecting and smoking Cuban cigars.
Once I retired I went crazy—followed every Internet forum on the subject—identified reputable vendors in Europe and Asia and Australia—and then bought out the Cuban cigar catalog—bit by bit by bit—hitting hard when discounts were available.
So now I am a true expert—and the cigars are every bit as good as I hoped—and I have a lifetime supply.
This guy needs a passion.
Well, at least he finally turned off CNN...me thinks he is a leftie whiner. Does he exercise? That is a JOB when older. Does he have kids, grandkids? Does he cook? Clean? Has he planned how long that 1 Million dollars will last?
At a minimum, turn off CNN. Then go to Amazon, and order complete series of your favorite TV shows. Gunsmoke. The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Whatever.
That doesn’t mean you should just sit around and watch TV, of course. Take walks. Go shopping - just to get out. Etc.
But for sure, don’t watch leftie TV. You’re either be brainwashed or get ulcers. Neither is good.
There is nothing more rewarding than pouring life into once dead men, through the Gospel and fellowship.
Reminds me of an older Midwest lady working at a trinket store on Pier 39(SF). It seemed she came out here with her husband for visit at a time when SF was the most beautiful city in the world. She was so enamored with the place she came back on her own to experience more of it. Left the husband behind. She’d go back a few months later after she’s had her fill. At their age there was no need to worry about foolin’ around on the side. Me, I’ll never work another day in my life or put on a raincoat/jacket. It may mean chasing the good weather but that’s ok.
“This guy needs a passion.”
Totally.
If he needs to break it down and analyze it and come up with options like this, then he had no passions or outside interests to begin with.
“...turn off the TV.”
Excellent advice.
A million dollars doesn’t go as far as it used to.
Between your local library and YouTube, you don’t have to rely on CNN for your viewing.
It’s more important, though, to get out and be active and sociable.
Failing that, robot puppies and kittens are getting cheaper all the time.
