Text messages obtained by Juliegrace Brufke of 24sight News appear to confirm that Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) had an inappropriate relationship with Regina Santos-Aviles, a former staffer who committed suicide by self-immolation last September.
Another former Gonzales staffer who described himself as Santos-Aviles’s “best friend” recently told the San Antonio Express-News that Santos-Aviles had admitted the affair to him, and that she had been battling depression ever since her husband found out about the relationship, causing the congressman to “abruptly cut her off.”
He also produced text messages in which Sant0s-Aviles admitted to the affair.
Gonzales denied the affair in November at a Texas Tribune festival, and said he would “NOT BE BLACKMAILED” after the publication of the Express-News story.
“Ms. Santos-Aviles was a kind soul who devoted her life to making the community a better place. Her efforts led to improvements in school safety, healthcare, and rural water like never before,” said Gonzales in a statement. “It’s shameful that Brandon Herrera [Gonzales’s primary opponent] is using a disgruntled former staffer to smear her memory and score political points, conveniently pushing this out the very day early voting started. I am not going to engage in these personal smears and instead will remain focused on helping President Trump secure the border and improve the lives of all Texans.”
But on Monday, Brufke produced “text messages obtained by 24Sight News from a forensic extraction of Santos-Aviles’ phone conducted as part of an active legal claim by her widower’s attorney” in which the congressman “made explicit sexual requests to his late congressional staffer who repeatedly resisted.”
In various messages addressed to Santos-Aviles, Gonzales wrote “send me a sexy pic,” fantasized about being “On top pinning your legs” before asking about her own sexual preferences, and, in one particularly crass message, wrote only, “Anal?”
Both Santos-Aviles’s widower’s lawyer and work friend have alleged that the affair between the lawmaker and his employee was known among other members of Gonzales’s staff.

Agree.
Rep Gonzales.
from the FRchives:
Eeeewwwwww.
It’s almost never the crime, but the coverup that brings them down.
Exactly.
That tight, thin-lipped grin reminds me of Chuck “The Schmuck” Schumer.
The behavior described violates every “harassment” policy and law on the books. If this slime weren’t a congressthing, it would be facing criminal as well as civil trial.
causing the congressman to “abruptly cut her off.”
That’s a switch. A congressman STOPS screwing a constituent?
Isn’t Texas known for having Democrats run as Republicans?
How naive are you? Lets start with Trump. He’s the king of slimy sex stuff. Republicans have been been just as bad as Democrats in this regard. Men will be men.
He’s arguing over the fact of a relationship with a woman, and I’m wondering who set the woman on fire. Women don’t commit suicide by disfiguring themselves. They use drugs or hanging.
Per Wiki
Gonzales is considered a moderate Republican, having voted for proposals such as the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and the Respect for Marriage Act. In 2023 he was the sole Texas Republican in the House to oppose the Border Safety and Security Act of 2023. These positions resulted in a censure from the Texas Republican Party.
He is also one of 18 Republicans who voted against Jim Jordan’s nomination for Speaker of the House all three times, and the only Republican to have voted against the House rules package afterwards.
Gonzales’s votes prompted several conservative primary challengers in 2024, most notably YouTuber Brandon Herrera, who forced a runoff after Gonzales received less than 50% of the vote. He won the runoff election with 50.7% of the vote.
On May 19, 2021, Gonzales was one of 35 Republicans to join all Democrats in voting to approve legislation to establish the January 6, 2021 commission meant to investigate the storming of the U.S. Capitol.
On March 4, 2023, the Texas Republican Party’s executive committee censured Gonzales for failing to vote in line with the party positions, citing his decision to support the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and the Respect for Marriage Act (both in 2022) as well as his vote against a House rules packages passed after the contested 2023 Speaker election.
On June 13, 2024, Gonzales was the sole Republican who voted against an amendment that would prohibit Tricare and the Department of Defense from covering and furnishing gender transition surgeries and gender hormone treatments for individuals that identify as transgender.
In the published text messages, from April 2025, Santos-Aviles wrote that she had an affair with Gonzales in 2024. According to her husband, Adrian Aviles, Santos-Aviles confessed to the affair on May 29, 2024 (one day after Gonzales’s victory in the 2024 Republican primary). Aviles told media outlets that his wife had a sexual relationship with Gonzales for two to three weeks before he caught her, and she admitted the affair. Following this, Aviles asked his wife to quit her job, but she refused. Aviles then confronted Gonzales and his campaign about the affair, which led to Santos-Aviles being black-sheeped at work. The couple later separated, and Santos-Aviles fell into depression. Aviles stated that she threatened to kill herself one month before her suicide, but police arrived and found “nothing of concern.” Aviles added that he disagrees with the ruling of her death as a suicide.
Too dumb to not realize you don’t text things like that to anyone.
And self immolation. That’s dedication.
Self-immolation is self-punishment, self-loathing for the harm she caused...like Judas’ hanging.
God, please have mercy on her soul and help the widower.
BYE TONY!
Adios, Mofo!

Light My Fire
by the Doors
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now, we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre.
Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah.
