Would a Universal Inheritance Improve American Lives?
Newsmax ^

Posted on 02/22/2026 9:22:50 AM PST by DIRTYSECRET

If people have property when they die, who should inherit it? You can't take it with you.

Increased inequality reduces government's concern for the general welfare.

The public owns all natural resources in common and no one deserves more than an equal share of their fruits. The Alaskan oil dividend could be a model here.

Inheritance reform would not eliminate billionaires; it would only eliminate hereditary billionaires.

We already have Universal Inheritance.

It’s the National Debt.

There was a foundation in the news recently which was looking to spend all of its assets and dissolve. The founder believed that every such foundation is eventually taken over by leftists, either family members or outside grifters. So he set an expiration date on the foundation and time was drawing near.

I wish I remembered whose it was. I don't think it was Buckley, but it might have been someone of his age and politics.

The “Foundation” game must be stopped.

The implication is the foundations are the problem, or that guns are the problem.

but you did use the word games/use.

Libs have take over so many well intentioned foundations.

Under the “nothing changes till the money stops” theory, destroying the wealth is one way? Tax it? Let the Govt absorb all foundations?

No easy answer. Doing my own estate planning, thinking about the burnt offering. Throw a big party, burn it up.

“Inequality” is a communist buzzword intended to destroy the family and private property.

So, when the owner of a 640 acre family farm...owned for over 100 years...when he passes he cannot leave it to his kids?

It becomes the property of the collective?

That’s just communism implemented slowly.

Communism advances one funeral at a time...

Then something changed.......................

Yup. The government decided it would be the arbiter over who is worthy of "charity" and who must pay for it. The income tax was born with "progressive" levels of punishment meted out for the more successful.

Inheritance kills or ruins all involved. At best the benefactors become insolvent on their new assets. Then there is the whole problem of entitled spouses and those not bequeathed.

Trust me. I would rather have not inherited that which my mother bequeathed to me, my wife, and my children. It makes for very bad relations.

Giveaways always end the same way. The money given flows from the dumber to the smarter and before long everything is as it was.

The incentive to “use it or lose it” will be huge. If I can’t pass it down, I might as well blow it on frivolities!

At my former place of employment, employees earned PTO hours for hours worked. Toward the end, 6.12 hours earned for 80 hours worked. The company put a 300 hour cap on PTO accrual. If you were at the 300 limit, the company just pockets your PTO accrual. That generated the "use it or lose it" behavior. When you approach the limit, take the time off. In my case, I took every other Friday off. I started doing that after I had worked YEARS with my PTO at the limit and the company pocketed nearly a full year of PTO hours.

"If four trillion dollars will be inherited annually, dividing it equally among all U.S. residents would distribute $11,760 per person or $47,000 annually for a family of four."

This is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever seen in a publication.

Most "inheritances" flow to surviving spouses, followed by children. Seizing those assets leaves widows, widowers, and their children penniless. How could that possibly be a good idea?

The author's propose a partial "solution" - "Deposit of a departed soul's estate into the trust fund could be postponed for a surviving spouse. A limited amount dedicated to support of an incapacitated child might also be reserved"

How generous! If a young family has a horrific car crash, killing the parents and disabling one of the two surviving children, that kid gets "a limited amount" while the other child ends up penniless and homeless.

Life insurance doesn't help, since it is of course part of the inheritance. And so are the crops on the farm, or the tools in Dad's truck, and even the kid's bikes which actually are assets of the parents.

The author's claim that "Deceased persons' property was not created by those remaining alive" is a new, and unusual viewpoint rejected by every divorce court in the country. Most business and farm families would reject the idea, because wives and children often make major contributions to the business or farm operations.

It seems like some communists have snuck into Newsmax.

If the government is worried about the wealth gap they should go back to a sound financial policy and ending globalism which puts more money into fewer and fewer hands.

That is worth repeating. The real cause of the "wealth gap" is inflationary fiat currency. Government funds go to insiders and as we now know, politically connected Somalians and various NGOs and enable the purchase of assets before inflation takes over. This was plainly visible when COVID drove many small business people bankrupt but put billions of dollars into the investment accounts of the already wealthy.

Inflation causes the wealth gap as it artificially increases the dollar value of assets, without a corresponding increase in wage incomes.

This idea is toxic socialism. If a guy struggled and took risks and acquired 500 acres of farmland, why should it be given to people who sat on their ass all their life? His family should inherit it.

Yes having the huge wealth gap is dangerous.
How do we get rid of it?

How about more freedom? Less govt regulation?
Let the taco truck guy be able to start a restaurant . Lets quit paying so many people to get law degrees to write huge amounts of regulations.
Maybe limit the ability of a company to write off salaries over a certain amount.
Term limits in Congress. Get rid of gold plated healthcare plans for DC politicians.

This is inevitable, along with Universal Basic Income, as a consequence of AI.

Only if AI results in universal stupidity, which unfortunately it might.

The idea that AI as it currently exists will somehow replace all actual work is just a fantasy sales pitch to raise investments in AI companies.

Actual AI systems as they exist today can't even correctly describe how to perform simple engineering, construction or repair tasks in real world problems.

The concentration of wealth and power...

But that isn't actually happening. If you look at the whole world there are more widely distributed wealthy people than ever before. The average person is wealthier today than at any time in history, and that includes billions of Indian and Chinese people who collectively hold more wealth than the few entrepreneurs who happen to have large stock holdings in their companies.

The trouble is billionaires set up foundations where they transfer their fortunes fully tax free. Then they set out to manage the foundation assets in a manner where they still derive the benefits of the wealth but not the liability. Many also fund destructive organizations, or they fall under control of successor radical family members who are angry, entitled, and destructive.

“but you can take the wealth away from power,
take away the power from wealth.”

Only if you have greater power.

“Or has I have pointed out, history shows us that resets seem to happen in God’s providence.”

No the resets happens when enough people have had enough of the current people in power to uprise in mass to overthrow them.

So it behooves those in power to keep the masses reasonably happy, so they don’t start causing problems.

Xi in China, for example, has done a pretty good job of it. The mullahs of Iran, not so much.

It’s really that simple!
