A video about the Air India fuel switches has been circulating online — and a lot of people are drawing big conclusions from it. But what do airline pilots actually think when they watch it?
Captain Steeeve reacts to the viral clip and explains how fuel control switches really work in the cockpit, why they’re designed the way they are, and what many viewers may be misunderstanding. Using real-world airline experience, he breaks down the aviation context behind the headlines while respecting the ongoing investigation.

Nobody should. It’s a standard ploy by the Indians to lay the blame for the crash somewhere other than the Air India pilot who was SOLELY responsible for his INTENTIONAL suicide and mass murder.
Let Air India and the Indian government pay for the consequences of this tragedy caused solely by an Indian citizen and NOBODY ELSE.
bump

You have to pull up to get the circled tab to disengage, flip the switch and then release to let the tab reengage on the other side. I can do little quarter inch switches with just fingertip friction, but those fuel switches look like they would need a real grasp and pull.
Exactly correct,
as can be seen in your depiction, the fuel control switch(s) cannot be accidentally moved to ‘cutoff’ (they are protected on left and right by rigid guards. see the blue tab in the photo)
They can however, BOTH be placed in cutoff at any time .
does not take much effort at all..
Captain Steeeve showed a video, which he wasn’t sure was authentic, where one of the switches could be changed without lifting the knob as designed. But to me and to Captain Steeve the odds that both switches would fail like that is astronomical.
I believe they actually recovered the switches from the crashed airplane, albeit burned, and they still worked.
If one engine was cutoff, they probably could’ve managed to get into the air on one engine. Not sure about that though.
I believe it was a case of mass murder/suicide.
The switch(s) CANNOT be changed without intentionally lifting as designed..
Yes, I know “as designed”. I suspect the one in the video has been tampered with to make it sensational.
The fuel control switch(s) CANNOT be changed without intentionally lifting it..
