Quentin's death: four things to know about the Nemesis collective

What is the Nemesis identity collective? What are his struggles? An update on this small group, after the death of Quentin, a 23-year-old student who participated in the supervision of a Nemesis action in Lyon, according to its founder Alice Cordier.

Quentin, a mathematics student, died on Saturday after an attack on the sidelines of a conference of LFI MEP Rima Hassan in Lyon, against which members of Nemesis were demonstrating. However, his parents indicated through their lawyer that he was "neither a security guard nor a member of any security service".

Alice Cordier (not her real name), 28, founded the collective she heads in 2019 to represent, according to her, victims of violence "who have not felt listened to by other associations, subject to ideology".

"We started without any support, on the right no one knew us, activists had to leave their jobs," she told AFP last year, saying at the time that the collective did not receive subsidies.

The activist, who is very present in the media and on social networks, has become the main face of the collective over the years.

Nemesis, which borrows its name from the Greek goddess of revenge, presents itself as an "association for the protection of women"...

The collective evokes the theme of violence against women by systematically linking it to immigration. "Feminism has been the prerogative of the left for decades and the left does not realize today that there are new issues, especially in terms of the migration issue," Alice Cordier told AFP.

This small group, which claims some 300 activists, is trying to mobilise on social networks, where it has about 110,000 followers on Instagram and 120,000 on X. In particular, he lists cases of sexual violence, often insisting on the foreign nationality of the suspects.

Going by the excerpt, Nemesis is an activist group (left-leaning, mostly women) seeking to end violence against women and calling out the problem of immigrants in perpetuating it.

I am still scratching my head with a bewildered look on my face. Is this the same as YELLOW VEST protest?

No, I don’t think has anything to do with the Yellow Vest protests.

I get the impression from the excerpt there is a group of women in France calling themselves Nemesis) who are really angry about the violence that men (particularly immigrants—you-know-who) inflict upon them. They staged a protest in Lyon(?) and a guy named Quentin (a friend of one of the protesting women and who volunteered with others to provide “security” for the group) was killed by “far-left counter-protesters” (my guess: a gang of immigrant men) that tried to battle with the Nemesis group.

Jeune Garde, the group that attacked Nemesis and killed Quentin, is far left and linked to Antifa, if that’s what you meant. Nemesis (I’ve since learned) is regarded as “far right” by European authorities for it’s indentitarian stance (Europe belongs to Europeans) despite also being feminist.
