The men’s hockey team for the United States will square off against Canada on Sunday in the gold medal game. Well before this matchup was even confirmed, there were rumblings about President Donald Trump taking a trip to the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Team USA’s road to the gold medal game wasn’t a smooth one to say the least. They needed a game-winning goal from defenseman Quinn Hughes in overtime to defeat Sweden in the quarterfinals. That thrilling win must have given them the confidence they needed heading into the semifinals though, as the United States defeated Slovakia 6-2 on Friday night.
Now, Team USA will face off Canada as it tries to capture its first gold medal in men’s hockey since 1980.
“It’s the final that we wanted and the team that we wanted to play,” Minnesota Wild forward Matt Boldy said. “It’s exciting for the fans and for hockey and everything like that.”
There might be some additional pressure on Team USA this Sunday. According to reports from Italy, the belief is that Trump will attend the gold medal game for men’s hockey.

I don’t think he will go as the egg on his face if they lose will outweigh the positive effect upon the USA player’s moral.
However, his comments after the USA wins will be meme worthy.

We took a two week fishing trip, every year to Canada for over 25 years from the late 70's - early 2000's. It was a "fly in camp" about 600 miles north of Montreal/Ottawa at a place called Father Lake and Doda Lake.
The fishing was fantastic and we loved it, my brothers in law and our sons, just a great time.
Today, because of all of the timbering you can drive in, but we haven't been back to Canada since just after 9-11.
The way we were treated by those snooty French-Canadians was too much for us to want to spend our time and money there.
I wouldn't go back if the trip were free.
