Rescuers are currently weighing the idea of setting off explosives in order to trigger additional avalanches on the mountain where at least eight skiers were killed.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to recover the bodies of the dead skiers since the horrific avalanche Tuesday. In order to make conditions safer for rescuers, officials will now take to the air to decide whether or not they can manually trigger avalanches with explosives.
“The objective of the aerial surveys is to visually assess the conditions of the avalanche scene and snowpack as well as to make determinations if controlled avalanche mitigation may be possible at some point. Controlled avalanche mitigation consists of pre-planned explosive deployment to intentionally release unstable snowpack,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
“These proactive measures are designed to reduce the risk of naturally occurring avalanches and enhance first responder safety within the affected area, so they may recover victims with lower risk.”
The recovery process has been delayed by inclement weather and the fear of additional avalanches in the area. While eight skiers are confirmed dead, there’s at least one more missing and presumed dead.

It is terrible. Their carefully curated images have taken a beating.
May they rest in peace.
Me too! I haven’t snow-skied in 20+ years. I should only be allowed on the bunny slopes going forward!
It's not like the bodies are going to decompose.
I think explosives might eliminate the need to recover the bodies.

Presumed. There aren’t any bodies.
Wife and I are headed to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow morning. We don’t ski but we’ll be relaxing on the lake and in the casinos tomorrow night. All that snow should be quite the site.
Or the recovery team can just wait for the snow to melt.
Enjoy! Maybe it is better that you waited to go until the week is almost over.
My son and his wife normally go to Tahoe this week, but they have fallen on hard times, so I’m pretty happy they decided not to go further into debt just for appearances, something my DIL is very much into (appearances, and doesn’t worry about debt).
Wait until it thaws. Use cadaver dogs to locate the bodies and note their GPS locations.
The families should pay for this. They can apparently afford an approximately 9-day back country skiing trip complete with guides, so if they want the deceased bodies back they should pay for it instead of charging taxpayers for the bill.
Wait for spring. Recovering bodies ain’t worth dying for.
a lot of people don’t know what a tree well is and most have not stood on 7 feet of snow next to a line shack looking at the top of a roof next to their snow machine. It’s a regional thing and to a lot of people it doesn’t register.
I don't ski, but live near Mammoth Mountain where a few years ago, 11 feet of snow fell in the town, in the town, during one storm, not just on the mountain ski area.
If they are moms of minor children this back country ski trip was very irresponsible.
After they use the explosives, recovery will be made with butterfly nets.
You know what it looks like. So do I. Folks in Miami don’t. That’s why I said “tree well”. They never sat on a snow machine next to a pine tree with an area underneath 7 or 8 feet deep like an empty bucket. I’ve seen moose stuck in them. The ocean is a mother. Mountain snow is Mother Nature saying there ain’t no easy way. IMO. Regards.
