This was always coming. A gold medal game long expected, long anticipated and long prepared for. This rivalry been played out on this stage six times before at the Winter Olympics and Team USA hoped to get one back on their most hated opponents.
They surely had the potential to do so. Throughout the women's ice hockey tournament in Milan, Canada's women's team looked shaky - getting battered 5-0 by the US and barely surviving against Switzerland to reach the gold medal game.
The Americans, meanwhile, were arguably their most dominant group ever sent to the Olympics. Going into Thursday evening's showpiece, they were the heavy favorites having gone undefeated in the tournament and outscoring their opposition by a combined 31-1.
It was a typical USA-Canada rivalry game: tight and heavily contested to the very end. But they still managed to finish with an aggregate score of 33-2 to clinch the gold.
It required a pair of American miracles. First, a goal from Hillary Knight to tie the game with less than three minutes remaining. Then, the beautiful game-winner from Megan Keller to send her defender to the floor before tucking in the shot to clinch the gold.
It's the third time in history that the United States has won the gold in women's hockey - having previously beaten Canada for the crown in 1998 and 2018.

I hope 33 is a typo. Otherwise, the whole sensational story is a made up lie! 3-2 should be correct.
I read the article, and 33-2 is correct. I don’t understand “aggregate scoring”, I think.

The Anthem after the awards always makes my eyes wet.
Total through the tournament. All but 2 games were shutouts.
I’m surprised the Canadian Team didn’t play for the Chinese.

The state transition from 31-1 to 33-2 means that in the final game USA scored 2 and Canada scored 1, and is completely consistent with the reported game result.
