Tesla engineers deflected calls from this tech giant’s now-defunct EV project

Tesla engineers deflected calls from Apple on a daily basis while the tech giant was developing its now-defunct electric vehicle program, which was known as “Project Titan.”

Back in 2022 and 2023, Apple was developing an EV in a top-secret internal fashion, hoping to launch it by 2028 with a fully autonomous driving suite.

However, Apple bailed on the project in early 2024, as Project Titan abandoned the project in an email to over 2,000 employees. The company had backtracked its expectations for the vehicle on several occasions, initially hoping to launch it with no human driving controls and only with an autonomous driving suite.

The company had backtracked its expectations for the vehicle on several occasions, initially hoping to launch it with no human driving controls and only with an autonomous driving suite.

It then planned for a 2028 launch with “limited autonomous driving.” But it seemed to be a bit of a concession at that point; Apple was not prepared to take on industry giants like Tesla.

Wedbush’s Dan Ives noted in a communication to investors that, “The writing was on the wall for Apple with a much different EV landscape forming that would have made this an uphill battle. Most of these Project Titan engineers are now all focused on AI at Apple, which is the right move.”

Had to read past the headline and first three paragraphs to find that the article relates to Apple.

Tesla engineers wouldn’t help a competitor? Horrors!

Why is this newsworthy?

It had to be Apple though.
They are the only tech giant that gave up on EVs after spending billions on it for about a decade.

Call me crazy but Apple right now is a profit machine and owning the stock has been spectacular success, in my mind their success if largely dependent on the iPhone.

I wonder if some technology comes along and makes cell phones less useful will Apple suffer a huge disruption because their success so tied to one product.

One of the guys I work with just told me that he has to replace the headlight in his Tesla model Y. It is not like changing the bulb. He said they had to remove the bumper.
That the Tesla dealership quoted him........

$1400.

BOOM

I said if he had to change both it might be better to just junk it.

The cost of EV ownership is really underreported. Insurance, depreciation even tire wear are all significantly higher.

My buddy has 70K miles on his. He has replaced the tires tow or three times and the front brakes once. Although, he said the one tire change was because he ran over roofing nails on his driveway after his roof was replaced. The roofing company(insurance) paid for new tires.

He charges it at home(OUTSIDE)his garage.
Typically drives less than twenty miles round trip to work and back.

Apple seems to be trying their hand at media content like Apple TV. I don't know how much money it makes or if it's got a future. They tried their hand at a server version of the Mac OS, but that didn't last long. So it looks to me like Apple's revenue is tied to the iPhone, iPad, and some sales of Mac laptops and desktops (especially in the video editing industry).

They weren't asking for help. They were trying to hire away Tesla engineers at double their Tesla salary. They didn't get many takers.

I recall 80-90’s corvettes, same deal. Except in a corvette, it was *just* a headlight, and you had to pull the front-end off to change it.

Do you know what a Matrix headlight is? If the total cost is 1400$, then the labor must only be 400$ or so.

P.S. price a matrix headlight from an ICE car.....Same price.

It’s a no-brainer what Apple was after. Tesla is years ahead of anyone regarding self-driving. Not to mention, the engineering that goes into the rest of the car. Detroit and others thought they could just put electric motors and batteries in cars/trucks designed for gas/diesel engines. They found out the hard way that it wasn’t that easy. Teslas are in a league by themselves.

First, fuel-wise, it's cheaper to drive than a comparable gas car. If you charge the car at home, so much the better. It cost less to insure my wife's Tesla Model Y than it does our fully loaded 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. My GMC van wears tires faster than that Tesla even begins to.

I do not believe that or the insurance rates. I have seen the data and your assertion does not hold up at all.

I got a new Tesla Model Y last summer. My insurance rates were about the same factoring in that I was replacing a comparable sized 6 year old Honda Accord.

The only "data" that matters to me is the "data" that hits my back pocket. And, it's not an "assertion." It's a fact. Maybe you're getting your insurance from the wrong company.
