Five stranded on closed mountain pass after Uber driver insisted on following incorrect GPS

A recent Uber trip in Summit County will likely become something four unfortunate passengers will laugh about years down the road. That said, it must have been very frustrating at the time it all went down.

According to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, four riders and their Uber driver became stranded on the snowmobile-only Georgia Pass after the driver’s GPS unit reportedly told him to take the route during a trip to Bailey. Prior to getting stranded, the passengers reportedly told the driver that his GPS was wrong multiple times, but he continued, insistent on following the navigation unit’s instructions.

Prior to getting stuck on the snowy road, the driver passed three large signs that noted the route was closed to wheeled vehicles. That didn’t stop the driver though, who eventually slid off the groomed portion of the road and into a ditch while approaching Middle Fork.

No one was injured, but the vehicle was immobilized until a deputy with a tow rope arrived at the scene. The driver was ultimately issued a citation for his actions – but the problems with vehicles on Georgia Pass in recent days didn’t stop there.

On the same recent evening, a juvenile snuck out of his home for a late-night drive to “clear his head.” He, too, made the unfortunate decision of attempting to travel the snowmobile-only Georgia Pass, which ends up reaching an elevation of about 11,598 feet.

After driving several miles up the road, his vehicle also became stuck. Amid a lack of cell phone service, he opted to embark on an hour-long walk to Tiger Road, eventually getting enough signal to call his mother for help.

A bunch of years ago, I went on a ski trip to Utah, staying in Salt Lake City.

The road to Park City and beyond was a two lane mountain road with no guard rails on the cliff side.

At the entrance to that road, there was an electric sign that would say if the road was open or only 4WD vehicles with chains were allowed, depending on snow conditions.

There was even a parking area where you had to pull in to install your tire chains if required.

it amazes me how many tourists here have no idea of how to drive in snow

It's like that EVERY year in Indianapolis!

Seems like Hoosiers have a problem with year long memory loss.

However, one year found me on the way to Casper WY, heading west, when it began to snow. It was coming down pretty fast and folks were bailing off of the interstate and heading into town to be safe.

When in Rome, you get a motel room, too.

Now the snow was 1-2 inches by this time, but the locals were sliding all over the place!

Surprised me, asI thought that if ANYONE could handle a little snow, it would be these guys!

Felt Like was back home!

Bottom line: the snow ended at that point and never got very deep at all.

Stopped the next morning at Independence Rock and the snow was 1/2 gone by then. Interesting rest stop.

It doesn’t mention how long they were stranded.

“I speak English in my country.”

I set my liberal brother up during a conversation. Was on a project and one of the helpers the large company provided me with only knew a few words of English so it made things difficult.

“Well, you can’t expect new immigrants to know English right away. Our grandparents didn’t know it either.”

“Yeah - except he was their longest term employee - 26 years!”

“Oh. Wow.”
