Russian airlines suspend flights to Cuba

Russian airlines Rossiya and Nordwind, which regularly connect Moscow with Cuban destinations such as Havana, Varadero, and Holguín, have decided to suspend their flights to the island due to a critical shortage of aviation fuel.

The decision was confirmed this Wednesday by the Russian federal aviation agency Rosaviatsia. In an official statement published on Telegram, the agency explained:

"Due to the difficulties in supplying aircraft fuel in Cuba, the airlines Rossiya (part of the Aeroflot group) and Nordwind were forced to modify their flight schedules to the airports in this country."

According to the agency, Rossiya will operate only repatriation flights - known as ferry flights, without passengers on the outbound leg - from Havana and Varadero to Moscow in the coming days to evacuate Russian tourists stranded on the island.

“Afterwards, the airline's flight program will be temporarily suspended until the situation changes,” Rosaviatsia emphasized.

Russia has activated mechanisms for the full reimbursement of ticket costs for passengers not part of tour groups, while technical solutions are being sought to resume operations.

Nordwind, for its part, has implemented mandatory adjustments to its schedule, although it currently maintains punctual flights to Holguín and Varadero.

However, sources from the Russian Ministry of Transport and the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) warn that bilateral air connectivity is severely compromised.

The temporary suspension affects thousands of travelers.

According to official figures, around 4,000 Russian tourists are currently in Cuba, stranded due to the partial suspension of air traffic.

The operator Pegas Touristik, one of the main tour operators working in the Caribbean destination from Russia, confirmed that it has halted the sale of new vacation packages to the island.

It's amazing to be witnessing the death rattle of the regime.

The question is: What will replace it?

Cuba may be trying to hold on until the Midterms.

Then Cuba will get some relief especially if the Democrats in the U.S. Congress helps them out.

Cuba used to be US party place.
Pretty well off and really fun place to visit.
The ancient ones told me that this was the best place in the world to go on vacations.
So yes, it can be a rich party place again!

In a related story, Hijackers are no longer demanding pilots to take their flights to Cuba.

I will admit that this is a consequence (I think a good one) to the Venezuela action that I did not foresee. No local aviation fuel means no flights. Planes don’t fly on fairy-dust.

I see maybe a business opportunity for a small commuter airline in a large airport nearby (maybe Miami). Aircraft small enough and close enough they didn't need to refuel in Cuba.

I saw something similar in Hawaii years ago, flying from Oahu to the Big Island. No terminal and no fuel on the Big Island, you just walked out on the tarmac, boarded and left.

I'm sure there are outfits in the Caribbean that could do it now, with existing infrastructure.

First Canada, earlier this week, now Russia?!? I think we’ll be seeing something related to Cuba sooner rather than later.

"Tourists". Sure, they're just tourists.
