It was a crappy situation with Eastern Bloc countries fielding their effectively professional athletes against a bunch of American kids. It wasn't at all fair, but it did feed an 'America standing against evil' theme. Now, so many of the world's best come to the US for training, the Olympics have become a creature of Madison Avenue. Even the opening ceremonies are just a recycled version of the "Millennium Walk" 2000 Super Bowl halftime show with Gaia presiding over a pagan ritual. It had NOTHING to do with what Italy brings to the world, with the exception of Andrea Bocelli's performance of Nessun Dorma. That had heart in it.

There was something special about Kurt Gowdy's reportage, so the Olympics lost something there too.
