Yeah, "Rover" the dog, was originally introduced as a guide in Microsoft "BOB" (remember BOB?), as part of Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. He came back in Windows XP for searching in File Explorer.
Trivia: Rover's messages were originally displayed in a Times New Roman font, but users considered the bookish, serif typeface too stiff and formal, inappropriate for a cartoon dog. In response, Microsoft designers created the infamous "Comic Sans" typeface for Rover, and it took off from there.
