JUST IN: Controversial Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino Reassigned Out of Minneapolis
Mediaite ^ | January 26, 2026 | Jennifer Bowers Bahney

CNN reported Monday that controversial Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino will be leaving Minneapolis, where he has been overseeing operations and vehemently defending officers following the shooting death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti.

Anderson Cooper broke the news Monday afternoon, saying, “Sources tell CNN that top Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino and some of his agents are expected to leave Minneapolis tomorrow,” before tossing to reporter Priscilla Alvarez.

“This really is a major shift in strategy here by the Trump administration,” Alvarez began. “Recall, Gregory Bovino has been a key player in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and became, in many ways, the public face of that crackdown across cities in the country. Most recently, of course, in Minneapolis.”

“We are now being told by sources that he is going to be departing Minneapolis with some of his Border Patrol agents tomorrow and going back to their respective sectors,” Alvarez said. “Now, we’re also told that part of this has been influenced by the frustrations within the administration over the handling and the public response of Saturday’s shooting.”

Earlier Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted at Bovino’s reassignment, saying, “Mr. Bovino is a wonderful man and he’s a great professional. He is very much going to lead Customs and Border Patrol throughout and across the country. Mr. [Tom] Homan will be the main point of contact on the ground in Minneapolis.”

In addition to giving press conferences where he described his border patrol agents as the true “victims” in the incident with Pretti, Bovino spent the weekend sparring with lawmakers and journalists on social media.

After CNN’s Jake Tapper insinuated he was a liar, Bovino asked for proof, writing, “Then identify the lie, Jake. No one can seem to find this mysterious ‘lie’.”

Tapper was happy to oblige, posting reams of court documents where a judge wrote, ““Bovino admitted in his deposition that he lied multiple times.”

“Let me know if I can help with anything else,” Tapper wrote.

Tell me would you rather have a well thought out prosecution approach with all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed? Working your way up to the “big fish”. To be presented to a grand jury then trial? With a venue other then the DC district court. Or maybe a slopped together one, done in the interest of speed and politics. Because if you slop it together and you fail, you’ve made the “big fish” martyrs.

And before you say military tribunal, USSC has final jurisdiction\review of military courts. How fast would they throw out a tribunal action that was a) trying civilians & b) looked more like some French Revolution revenge tribunal then anything American?

You then want a superduper fantasia military tribunal that’s superior to USSC?

As I understand it, the standard seems to be if the first person to shoot has reason to believe that his life was in danger.

SCOTUS long ago ruled that the shooters after that are not legally culpable, having relied on the first cop’s judgment (unless there is a pause and resumption in the middle of the shooting).

What’s really going to bake your noodle is the very real possibility, based upon video evidence, that the cop who disarmed the anarchist may have fired the first shot, either accidentally or due to an uncommanded discharge of the anarchist’s weapon, the notorious Sig Sauer P320.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Tom Holman is going there.

That’s nice but the enemy always wins when they cause their opponents to give up the general they were fighting against.

Here’s a five point plan of execution.
1. Arrest the Governor of Minnesota for grand conspiracy obstruction sedition and money laundering
2. Activate active Army and Marine personnel in every state where there is insurrectionist rebellion
3. Coordinate with the red State governors in the Red States for plan of action against the blue States
4. Appoint Mark Levin as special lead federal prosecute empowering him with special perks in going after all who are involved with this insurrection Republican or Democrat alike; bringing em up federal charges as Mark sees fit.
5. Sack Susan Wiles as Chief of Staff and appoint a more tactical strategic Chief of Staff in addition, bring in General Spaulding, LT. Col Robert McGinnis to the NSC.

the last time I saw Homan on TV last week he appeared pretty much run down and worn out. He didn’t have the fire he normally has.

Bovino’s first comment after the shooting was stupid.

1. It’s CNN and Mediaite both TDS outlets.
2. It’s just Bovino and a couple agents

The TDS media are blowing everything up and out of proportion to inflate everything Trump.

Homan in Bovino out and onto another mission is not all too earth shattering.I guess the black pills got handed out anyway.

The Atlantic is reporting that Bovino is going back to El Centro and will soon retire. Unknown if retirement was already in the works.

Fort Snelling is already the site of a U.S. Immigrations and Custom Enforcement field office and a DHS immigration enforcement and detention processing center. CBP will use land on a U.S. Army Reserve base there.

“The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requests support from the Department of War (DoW) to provide existing infrastructure to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a component of DHS, specifically an area for parking approximately 300-500 vehicles and 10 storage trailers, a ready room space for approximal 500-800 CBP personnel, a space to house, maintain and operate five CBP Air Assets, access to a magazine to store munitions, and other necessary facilities to support operations in the Minneapolis, Minnesota metropolitan area,” the email said.

Doesnt sound weak to me.

Trump TACO’ed on Minnesota (yuge!!!).

Trump was weak during the "Summer of Love" in 2020.

I was hopeful that he was able to learn from his lessons and apply to his second term.

Thanks! I asked my post below yours be deleted as it quoted directly from a Condé Nast publication, but the reporter at The Atlantic had two sources tell him Noem and Lewandowski are at risk of losing their jobs and your link makes it clear that Noem was all in on Bovino. He’s doing a damn difficult job in a dynamic environment where things can go sideways fast.
