Andy Burnham may be merely “disappointed” at being barred from standing as an MP, but voters on the streets of Greater Manchester are infuriated.
Constituents of Gorton and Denton have told of their anger at the rearguard tactics employed by Sir Keir Starmer’s allies to rebuff their “King of the North”.
Some said they were now considering voting for Reform UK in the looming by-election.
A panel of the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) blocked Mr Burnham’s attempt to return to Westminster by eight votes to one on Sunday.
Winning the seat might well have paved the way for Mr Burnham to launch a leadership challenge against Sir Keir Starmer.
Maureen Devlin, 88, from Gorton, told The Telegraph she had been poised to vote for the Greater Manchester Mayor to be her Labour MP.
She said: “I like Andy Burnham, he’s done a lot for Gorton. I think he would be better again as an MP. But Starmer is scared.
“That’s the whole trouble, because a lot more people would vote for Andy because Starmer is a waste of space. He is useless. I definitely prefer Andy.”

Reform can win this district and Special election.
They're big players.
THE BETTING:
Green: 2.8
Reform: 2.6
Labour: 3.7
Reform slight favorites. Much will depend on the candidate quality (who the Greens pick?) and if the District swings behind them and abandons the useless Labour.
Why on earth would anybody that would back Andy Burnham vote for reform. Just doesn’t make sense!
They want real change?
Andy Burnham is not real change.
You asked the question, and I was offering perhaps the answer. I made it into a question, because obviously I do nt have enough information to make a definitive answer, so the next best thing was to offer an educate guess.
Refom is kind of like Trump running for Preseident. At first, he had little support, but the more people got a look at him, the more people jumped upon the Trump train, including Democrats, Independents, Blacks, Hspanics & even young people who all normally vote for rthe Democrat.
It was that example, that was the basis for my educated guess. I hope my explanation clarifies my rather crypictic initial response. 😁👍
