I've Waited 40 Years to Dunk on Phil Collins About This
PJ Media ^ | 1/23/2026 | Athena Thorne

The wheels of justice grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine. In this case, it's been forty years since British establishment-pop workhorse Phil Collins incurred a young Athena's wrath with his band Genesis's mockery of the greatest president (up until then, anyway) of modern times.

f you're Gen X like me, your adolescence was happily enhanced by the heyday of old-school MTV. The concept was brand-new then: music videos by the hottest pop stars, 24/7, hosted by the original veejays — Alan Hunter, Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, and of course, "Triple J" J.J. Jackson. It was innovation, novelty, hormonal giddiness, and rock-n-roll!

I was not really keyed into politics at that age — I still loved America in a general way, including every president, but back then, we all still had basic values in common. Nevertheless, I could still tell that Ronald Reagan was an exceptional president, head and shoulders above the others I had known in my short life.

So when a British loudmouth, who was obviously a bit too high on his own supply, thought he somehow had standing to come on the brilliant American invention, MTV, and mock one of the greatest Americans I'd ever seen, it didn't sit too well with me. Who the hell is this guy who thinks he's so great that he can belittle the Gipper? I fumed.

In case you're not sure what I'm referring to, it was the music video for the single "Land of Confusion" by Collins's band Genesis that triggered me:

As you can see, the video is wildly disrespectful of the most effectual, momentous president I'd ever seen (at least, back then). It portrays him as a senile buffoon, overreacting to world events that he is utterly impotent at handling. It also mocked his beloved wife

FTA: “...it really frosted me that Phil Collins thought he should mock President Reagan for being old.

Fast forward 40 years, and Mr. Collins has now reached the ripe old age of 75 himself, and let us say, time has not been kind to him.

“Phil Collins has opened up about his recent health challenges, revealing that he has 24-hour live-in nurse care,” CNN is reporting:

He told [British presenter Zoe Ball] that he’s had five operations on his knee. “I can walk, albeit with assistance,” he said.

Not very rock-n-roll, Phil. Even bedraggled old Ozzy Osbourne could totter out on stage and rock our worlds at age 76. Collins hasn’t performed since 2022.”

When he goes there will be only one remaining original member of Brand X.

The amazing bass player Percy Jones.

They’ve lost three so far:

Morris Pert (Percussion)
John Goodsall (Guitars, Sitar, and Voltage-controlled Aluminum Bidet*)
Robin Lumley (Keyboards)

*this was actually listed in the liner notes on one of their albums

Was it really Phil, or his producers and older ones around him?

Phil Collins gets several passes because of his love for the Alamo.

This author is nuts.

The puppets that were used on Land of Confusion were from a very popular British TV series at the time called Spitting Image, who collaborated with Genesis on that video.

The beautiful thing about liberals is that they all die too! We get to mock them as they do. Like Rob Reiner, the liberal whose own failed parenting led to his son killing him! Nothing could be more sweet than that other than maybe a video of Rob begging for his life just before he was killed by having his throat slashed.

Reagan was also mocked and vilified by rockers Don Henley, Bruce Hornsby and John Cougar (you’re stuck with that!) Mellencamp.

Good video in the sense of being visually distinctive. I can remember it clearly to this day with those puppet caricatures. I wasn’t politically aware when it came out but when I got older its barbs at Reagan pissed me off, or at least annoyed me, whenever I happened to see it. It really is a shame that our best pop musicians are overwhelmingly libtards.

It must have burned him that the Gipper and Maggie Thacher got along so well.

When it comes to the music industry, musicians, they seem to be mostly left wingers. Art industry same way.

They live in a bubble. Only reading the left wing rags, Mother Jones, Rolling Stone, that kind of crap. They think they are for ‘social change’ and they can make themselves visible through this avenue. Makes them feel they are important I think.

‘artistic expression and social change, which often challenges the status quo. Many artists and cultural figures in this space advocate for progressive ideas, reflecting broader societal movements and values’.

Meanwhile what do they do in their personal lives? Alcoholism, drug addicts, womanizers.

Phil Collins mocking Reagan and Nancy as if he’s so much better than them.

Alcoholic, sleeping around like the rest of the musicians do blah blah blah same ole thing, ‘we know better than you’ leftist bunch.

Over those same 40 years I've often contemplated the following lyrics from the same song:

"I won't be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We're not just making promises
That we know we'll never keep"

How'd that work out?

Meh. I suppose Collins is a leftie, a lot of entertainers are lefties. I like Phil Collins, he’s produced a lot of enjoyable stuff. I wish him well, and may he be at peace for his next chapter.

SMH. This is is so stupid. Phil Collins had nothing to do with it. The company hired Spitting Image to make that video. Phil Collins (or any other member of Genesis) had absolutely nothing to do with the content.

Over the years, man Freepers have gotten angry at him for this, but they don't know what they are talking about.

In the U.K., Phil Collins is widely despised for being a Tory (conservative.) The reality is he's not even that political. He's apparently just an average guy. and he doesn't try to virtue signal.

He's definitely not anti-American. What kind of Brit's hobby is collecting artifacts from the Alamo? He ended up having the largest private collection of such material in the world, the he said he was going to donate it all to the museum.

I have a different theory about celebrities and entertainers. They know what they do really isn’t that special and that they’d fail in real life with a regular job as the vast majority of the population has.

Thus they feel a lot of “celebrity guilt” for being paid the outrageous sums that they are simply for doing enjoyable and relatively easy work. Amazing luck and not that much talent. Which causes them to take up all sort of causes in an attempt to sooth their celebrity guilt.
