Within weeks of Zohran Mamdani being sworn into office in New York City, homeless encampments have popped back up in Manhattan after he vowed on the campaign trail to stop clearing them away.
The democratic socialist, who took office on the first of the year, said in December he would stop the destruction of homeless encampments in the city - a hallmark of the previous administration led by Eric Adams.
'They are simply pushing New Yorkers who are living in the cold to another place where they will live in the cold,' Mamdani said at the time.
In the 23 days Mamdani has been in City Hall, encampments have popped up in Manhattan, including in the Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, and near the United Nations.
An East Village encampment showed a large display of suitcases, office chairs, trash bags, and tarps, among other items lined up along a graffitied wall.
Another in Chinatown showed two stolen shopping carts filled with reusable bags, trash bags, and more near Columbus Park.
As the days go on, more and more encampments are littering the streets - something rarely seen during the Adams Administration.
In 2022, Adams called for an initial sweep of 200 encampments when he launched his policy.
In 2025, he announced a $650million, five-year project to combat street homelessness and mental illness, which included more 'safe haven' beds - an alternative to the shelter system.
He also employed an outreach program to help get homeless people into shelters, which Mamdani criticized as ineffective.
Mamdani said Adams' approach to the homelessness crisis in the Big Apple just forcing unhoused New Yorkers to pack up shop and move to a different outdoor location.

New Yorkers voted for this. They can enjoy it now.
Gonna be a bunch of em dead after this storm
Over the years it seems as though quite a few of the homeless are directed toward shelters and places to reside but their drinking and drug use negates the whole process. Factor in the mentally ill and you have a permanent class , FERAL. Open up insane asylums and force these people to dry out or you will just continue to do this circle and get no where.
Eat sh— NYC, you voted for it, now eat it.
If you look at this through the lens of planned obsolescence, you start to understand that it’s deliberate. They WANT to destroy America’s major cities. Once they create a permanent underclass, they slowly chip away at the middle class, and boom! America is a third world country.
Graffiti is back. I give it 6 months before we are back to the 1970s futures with graffiti subway cars. Socialism ain’t no fun without a little vandalism to let us know we are living in a sharing the wealth paradise.
THEY VOTED FOR THIS CRAP!! EMBRACE THE SUCK< DUMBASSES!
So God will “fix the glitch”? 😊
Exactly. There are enough shelters around to host all of them.
Problem is that these people do NOT want to go to shelters.
Some are just urban campers who like this stuff, and most are drug addicts and mentally ill.
Shelters require getting off the drugs, and they do not want to.
NYC is going to serve as such a useful object lesson for everyone. I actually think its a blessing that Mandami won. This will hurt the Democrats badly in 2028.
Where do they come from? and where have they been hiding before they camped out on the streets?
Ironically the Moscow subway system was clean and beautiful in the Soviet era. Why can’t our domestic commies at least get that right?
The city of Copenhagen, Denmark has been run by a socialist mayoral administration since the 1920s. Its public transport system is impeccably clean and safe. Why can’t our domestic socialists do that?
Our domestic commies brag about the warmth of collectivism but invariably inflict the worst possible public transport on the public who they supposedly love.
Watch him destroy the city in real time! It will turn into those Soviet cities where the only people who go there are gov’t officials. They actually live in areas far removed from the city and only arrive in the city with guards.
Everyone else will be living in cramped apartments like hermits

My personal opinion is that they’re being moved in from outside.
the homeless population is multiplying in my county
there is plenty of work but it appears that begging and drugs is the preferred option for most of these young people
I refuse to enable them
“Watch him destroy the city in real time!”
Popcorn time!!
“Mamdani camps”
Yep, I was outside 5am Long Island NY, 7 degrees. I left a window in my car open and it was frozen in place so I poured hot water on it, that didn’t work and only made it worse because that froze. Too cold, almost as cold as the heart of Satans daughter Hillary Rotten Clinton, almost, not quite.
