We should partition Greenland into Arctic Greenland, to be owned by the United States, and Sub-Arctic Greenland owned by Denmark. Most of Greenland’s rare Earth minerals have been found south of the Arctic Circle, and the United States should share in this natural wealth.

There simply is no question that the United States, as the world’s superpower and primary defender of Western Civilization, must own and fully control Arctic Greenland

Trump was right, America clearly needs Greenland's bases, the pity is it was not necessary to nearly blow up NATO and alienate 1/2 a billion people to get what we already had or were going to get anyway.

It’s a DUMB argument if you consider that

1. Alaska doesn’t cock-block Russia from attacking the USA in any effective way and can’t be used as an efficient supply route to Greenland...

2. Unless you think Prudhoe is a realistic port for shipping stuff to Greenland at large scale, the American eastern seaboard has no redundancy.

In short, purely from a logistical angle, the USA would be far better of it Canada and Iceland (both of which are a lot closer to Greenland than Maine is) were onside.

Heck, even the UK and Norway are closer to Greenland than any major port on the American eastern seaboard.

If Trump had approached the UK, Norway, Canada and Iceland with an idea to have a joint NATO presence on Greenland, with them providing multiple sea routes to it on top of the one past Nova Scotia, that would’ve made far more sense.

Quid pro quo - Denmark and Greenland give up land + mineral rights in order to fund the creation of Golden Dome; USA benefits from seven different supply routes from EU-NATO on top of the US Atlantic shipping lane.

That would’ve been a far better deal because it could’ve shaved years off the build time and billions of dollars off the logistics costs for Golden Dome.

Russia and China would additionally have received the memo that even approaching Greenland won’t be worth the risk - if they can’t even approach the coast on the Russian side of it without EU-NATO detecting their approach, by the time they’re close to landing the USA and seven other countries would be ready to blow their boats out of the water.

If Trump did acquire all of Greenland for the USA and lost the support of EU-NATO in the process, there’s a very strong possibility that Russia and China would be MORE inclined to race to put brand new bases on there before the USA is able to defend its entire coastline.

A joint Russian/Chinese base could even be built on Greenland before Washington’s finished approving the budget to expand and refurbish Puffnik.

If you think that’s far-fetched, consider this: Following Germany’s occupation of Denmark in April 1940, the U.S. secured a defense agreement allowing American forces to protect Greenland from the Nazis. AFTER that was in place, German forces still managed to set up at least three bases in eastern Greenland - google operations “Holzauge,” “Bassgeiger,” and “Edelweiss.”

It doesn’t matter that the Nazis never managed to upscale their presence in Greenland - the inconvenient fact is, the USA couldn’t have prevented their incursions if it had been acting entirely on its own. The other WW2 allies were keeping the Nazis busy, which helped enormously.
