Meteorologists warn of ‘exploding trees’ as brutal cold snap expected to usher in subzero temps

A tree-mendous freeze.

Forecasters are warning that expected subzero temperatures could cause trees to explode as a brutal cold snap is expected to wallop most of the country in the coming days.

Trees may split and burst across the Midwest and Northern Plains Friday and Saturday as a bitter Arctic blast from Canada sends temperatures plunging to roughly 20 degrees below zero, according to social media meteorologist Max Velocity.

“EXPLODING TREES are possible in the Midwest and Northern Plains on Friday and Saturday, as temperatures are forecasted to fall 20 degrees BELOW zero!” the YouTuber, who has about 1.55 million subscribers, said in an X post Tuesday night.

Rebecca Ann, another social media weather buff, noted that although rare, the environmental phenomenon can threaten healthy and weakened trees in extremely frigid conditions.

Tree bomb control legislation needed.

I’m more worried about the atmospheric rivers and bomb cyclones I never heard about until a few years ago. Solar storms.

I seem to remember having read of a tribe that referred to the January full moon as “Moon of Trees Popping.” I guess it goes back quite a ways. That is one of the scariest sounds I have ever heard. It is hard to tell just where it is coming from and is always followed by the boom of an entire tree or heavy branch hitting the ground.

Being on that spot of ground would not be a good thing.

It is these tree bombs that are a threat to everyone. It is ironic that those irrational Chicken Littles who cry “Global Warming!” can get a hit in the ass from frozen trees.

Back when citrus was a large part of Florida’s economy, I sometimes saw orange trees with trunks shattered by a hard freeze. The sound of it happening was said to vary, from a rifle shot, to the snap of celery, or a door slamming.

Had a neighbor who had a dozen or so pine trees along his back property line. After one January ice storm he was left with a dozen or so telephone poles. We sat and watched them one by one the tops would bend over until they snapped off with a loud ‘pop’ and crashing to the ground.

I heartily recommend Max Velocity’s YouTube channel.

He and Riley are accurate, highly informative, and fun to watch.

And Max, if you’re lurking, hi to Cheese Curd!

Yes, a real, but RARE phenomenon. The scare media makes appear like whole forests are going to explode in a gigantic mushroom cloud taking down civilization itself. Of course the usual claptrap that this is due to “climate change.”

What should be of more concern is that these polar vortices will cause the forests of wind turbines that blight the Midwest to freeze up during a period of peak demand for electric heating and cause widespread blackouts from lack of adequate back up sources of power. This has happened several times in Texas.

Yeah.. they’re getting far to descriptive on weather alerts. It’s yet another attempt to grab attention for a normal occurrence.

“RARE!” When I lived in Wisconsin every early February we had a week of 27-30 below zero. Tree prepare for this, during the fall and winter the volume of water in the tree is reduced, which mitigate any freezing damage.

I think the point is that these trees have not had the time to prepare for this, because the temperatures are in the 50s today but low single digits forecast for 36 hours from now.

Yep - experienced it in Rochester NY in late 60s or early 70s - 18 below temps ... also made car springs make cracking noises when I got into it. Some of the trees sounded like rifle shots when they popped.
