Youtube and its parent company Google deserves to be sued.
For the past three weeks YouTube has been hosting a video that is a calculated lie, falsely accusing me of taking money from Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. It refused to remove the video.
It is, of course, a ludicrous accusation, but paid trolls are daily spreading this lie across the internet. This untruth is essentially an accusation of treason, which then leads the internet mob to call for my death.
Advocating for liability for Google is no small step for me. I have long defended the private-property rights of internet companies and long defended them against overzealous, partisan abuses of antitrust law, even when I was angry with YouTube for its policies that silenced my attempts to educate the public on the potentially deadly consequences of relying on cloth masks to prevent transmission of COVID-19.
But I will not sit idly by and let them host a provably false defamatory video, which is now part of a widespread harassment campaign. I am now receiving death threats.
The arrogance of Google to continue hosting this defamatory video and the resultant threats on my life have caused me to rethink Congress’ blind allegiance to liability shields.

I think defamatory videos should be legal. They should be fought with more speech.

That’s cheaper than, just about everything. That and there seems to be a misaligned concept here. The right of private property is not an issue here.

Actually, it shows just how graven and selfish Rand Paul is. This only became important to him AFTER it personally impacted him. He could not see the issue of the media lies when it was destroying others.
This is not an easy issue to manage but being an absolutist on private property rights is flawed to the core. Just as in free speech one cannot use it to bring about violence or physical harm directly to another, I.E. yelling fire in a crowded building, there are similar limits to most inherent rights.
Of course, Rand Paul could only see this when it caused him direct harm, he apparently could not have cared less when it affected others. Disgusting.
Google makes $1,000,000,000 a day. Divided by roughly 4,000,000,000 clicks a day world wide. Which means google makes roughly $0.25 per click on the internet. It is a monopoly of unimaginable size.
Not when they cross into libel.
One should and must have facts before making such assertions and accept there is a risk if found to be incorrect.
I respectfully disagree. There is a reason for slander and libel laws.
We've known for a long time that "Google and YouTube can’t be trusted to do the right thing" because they always do the left thing.
Then sue the person and make them prove the lie, Rand. That is what Trump does.

Could create a Streisand effect for Paul, a public figure. Making YouTube be a censor is not the right way to do this anyway.
