Gun violence legislation could get a second chance after Democratic Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger is inaugurated on Jan. 17.
A bill to ban the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines is one of several anti-gun violence proposals previously vetoed by Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin that could become law in 2026 under Democratic Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger.
On Jan 7, Democratic Del. Dan Helmer reintroduced a bill in the Virginia House of Delegates to ban large-capacity magazines and prohibit the importation, sale, purchase, or transfer of assault firearms in the commonwealth. Youngkin vetoed similar bills in 2024 and 2025 after they passed in the Democratic-led General Assembly.

Not only Virginia but many other states have these bans or proposed bans including Illinois, California, Washington, Oregon and a few others.

SCOTUS will overturn. I say go ahead and pass it.
The sale or transfer of large-capacity magazines — magazines or similar devices manufactured on or after July 1 that hold or can be modified to hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition — would also be a Class 1 misdemeanor.
Couldn't any magazine be modified to hold more than 10 rounds? Might take some shop work, but theoretically so?
Why not, other shit States have done so, the the Supreme Court has left millions of taxpaying American citizens hung out to dry by doing NOTHING to stop cray left wing human debris trample their CONSTITUTION RIGHTS.
The SC wishes the 2nd A was not there because it is undeniable. So they slow walk slapping down all of these encroachments.
Yes sir. There's nothing that a mill bastard, duct tape, and JB Weld can't handle.
Poor police response time is likely far more to blame than the size of the magazine that a mass shooting perp uses to achieve the death toll numbers they will get, particularly in a school or elsewhere where firearms are banned.
When? Other states have had such unconstitutional restrictions since the 90s and are still waiting

Yes, but that might make you a ‘firearms manufacturer’.
And subject to all those rules.
Justice Jackson can’t even define what a gun is!
They haven't so far in places like California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, D.C...
Justice Jackson, let me clarify. A man has a gun. A woman does not. She has a holster.
I’d rather Virginians suffer for voting in fools. And those that stayed home really deserve everything they get.
10 rounds vs 30 rounds in a magazine adds maybe 5-10 seconds to a shooters time. Two reloads at 2.5-5 seconds depending on how proficient the person is. Oh, and besides the obvious issue that someone who is hell-bent on carnage probably isn't concerned about the legality of the magazine he, she, or it is using.
I saw this coming after last November's elections. I still shake my head how any individual who transmitted emails advocating the death of the police and children could be elected.
I see Virginia becoming another Minnesota, New York, California, Maryland. Maybe it is the coward's way out, but I decided to move to Tennessee, which should be finalized at the end of this month.
“Finally”?
Nope. No bias there.
Well, they have finally thrown off the sheets and are now going after their real target of the 1960s, HANDGUNS. Here are the democrat promises beginning in 1962...
Starting in 1962 with the demand of Dems Thomas J. Dodd and Emanuel Celler...
1962 We ONLY want to register handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1964, We ONLY want to register ALL firearms, not ban them.
1968 We ONLY want to register all guns, and ban the import of foreign Saturday Night Specials, and 5-shot bolt action army surplus rifles! (they got the ban).
1970, We ONLY want to ban small American handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
In 1976, the founder of handgun Control Inc told in a New Yorker interview his goal was to make ownership of all handguns “TOTALLY ILLEGAL”.
1976 We ONLY want to ban ALL handguns! Rifles will not be affected!
1981, Actress Lee Grant on Good Morning America screams and pokes holes in the air with her finger...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”
1984, They came for the rifles.
1994, they got an “A-s-s-ault Rifle ban hoping it would be forever. Instead of turning off the lights and going home they immediately found another target to attack, 50 Cal Rifles “That can bring down an AIRCRAFT!”
They will never be satisfied till they have an defenseless society they can prey upon.
At our locar Farm and Ranch store they have plenty of new 30 round magazines. $20 each. Stores in states surrounding VA should start stocking up for a rush on them by Va buyers.
