Driving around Tokyo blaring slogans on the 84th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, ultra-nationalist outfit Taikosha only has around 100 mostly male, middle-aged members.
But the recent rightwards lurch of mainstream politics under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi means that suddenly some parts of their patriotic messaging no longer seem quite so fringe.
Since being elected in October, the conservative Takaichi has picked a fight with China, is preparing tough new rules on foreigners, and wants to outlaw desecration of the Japanese flag.

They better expell the muslims and africans they have been bringing in. Once they get dug in they will never get rid of them.
Japan is an amazing nation. It’s like 1950s america.
Oh and they never had the super high inflation hit as they worked during covid and didn’t pay people to stay home. And they aren’t corrupt like the US Politicians.
It’s my backup plan if/when USA goes full commie.
How do you know they’ll want you?
Just make sure you never have to use the "Addfare" machine at your train destination because you didn't pay enough when you got on. That's one of their strange pet-peeves which gets you a lot of tongue-clicking and scolding which I would understand if they DIDN'T have those machines available in the first place. Otherwise, it is a great place to visit or live. Very quiet and clean.
If I was Japanese I wouldn’t want you coming to eff up my country.
OMG! The dark night of fascism is descending.
What they did in Nanking is unforgivable. As China becomes more powerful I can see why they behaved that way.
So, they don’t have Federal Judges to fix things?

If the US goes to hell, the whole worldd will change. We have no way of knowing how the traditionally very insular Japanese would take to having many American refugees sail up to their shores.
A lot of people here on FR are always telling the immigrants here to go back home and fix their own country. I can see the Japanese telling us the same thing.
I’m 100% in agreement with you. Like I said, if I was Japanese, I wouldn’t want someone from a ruined country trying to come into mine.
There is some corruption, but it’s the old fashioned kind.
And of course, if the US goes ‘full commie’, who is going to help defend Japan?
Well if there is war between China and Japan, this time I’m supporting the Japs.
Ironically it was the US Immigration Act of 1924, that limited the number of Asians that could come to the US, that started the road to the militarists taking over Japan, they saw it as an insult by the US.
Compared to the USA the corruption is nil. We are full blown nation state failure corruption.
I’m not. My wife is Japanese and purposefully a Japanese citizen only. She’s on a green card visa. I’m honestly kind of wanting her to get deported so we can live in Japan, but she likes USA better (for now). She feels too judged in Japan.
Sounds like a good idea to me. If they're not worried about the Chinese or the Russians, why should we be (with respect to Japan).
My wife is a Japanese Citizen ;-)
I’m good. In fact we are set to inherit a condo in Yokohama and a 160 year old farmhouse in Ueda. I prefer the farm house, but we can bounce between the two.
But that’s only happens if I outlive her parents and her aunt. which I may not...Japanese live forever. So if I’m lucky I’ll get the properties when I’m 80. LOL.
