The Hunts are poor, they need the help. If I was rich I would have a baseball team, 81 home games a year.

Clark Hunt is the son of Lamar Hunt

Lamar and his brothers Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt famously attempted to “corner” the silver market in 1980. The scheme collapsed in March 1980 when COMEX exhange raised its margin requirements to hold speculative futures using exchange-issued credit.

Behind the scenes though, there were rumors the Carter Administration also quietly sold government silver to push the price down, for political reasons, as the speculative fever of gold and silver were felt to be contributing to inflation expectations. The US Government had stopped issuing silver coins by then, so the Federal horde of silver was no longer needed.

Nelson and Bunker eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1988, but Lamar, who was not as deeply involved in the silver scheme, did not. Lamar never pledged the KC Chiefs as collateral for his silver-purchase loans.
