One of the most dangerous illusions Americans are living under today is the belief that safety is ambient, existing automatically, everywhere, and at all times, by virtue of laws, norms, or declarations. For decades, we have been trained to assume that public spaces are fundamentally benign and that vigilance itself is somehow antisocial or unnecessary.
That assumption is no longer valid.
A steady stream of viral videos now documents what many quietly sense: sudden assaults in stores, flash-mob robberies, random attacks on public transport, group intimidation in ordinary places. These are not war zones or failed states. They are malls, trains, sidewalks, and parking lots. The common thread is not criminal genius, but civilian unpreparedness.

America has drifted into what security professionals call Condition White: relaxed, distracted, and unaware. In an era when threats are opportunistic and often collective, that posture is no longer merely naïve. Instead, it is dangerous.
Situational Awareness Is Not Paranoia
The argument here is not for panic or permanent fear. There is a critical distinction between situational awareness and hypervigilance, and confusing the two has left many Americans untrained and exposed.
Situational awareness is a calm, teachable skill. It is the ability to notice what is normal in an environment and recognize when something deviates from that baseline. It is relaxed alertness: heads up, eyes open, mind engaged. It is the same mental posture we use when driving: aware of surroundings, ready to respond, but not consumed by fear.
Hypervigilance, by contrast, is a trauma state. It assumes danger everywhere, exhausts the nervous system, and is unsustainable for ordinary life. No one is advocating that.
What America needs is a cultural reset toward Condition Yellow: alert, observant, and prepared to act early before a situation escalates.

That’s why they need to be in charge of such things, right?
Yes, we can’t even tell the truth in pictures illustrating articles like this. We pretend that Wally Cleaver and Richie Cunningham are the problem. As long as we have to pretend and keep our mouths shut while ignoring the elephant in the room, nothing will change.
It starts with body language quirks and then come the sounds!

Looks like you’re in denial.
The “SE” of fighter pilots, cops and first-responders is one thing but now it’s applicable to the average citizen just wanting to check the weather outside their window? Effectively managing one’s life should include reasonable levels of situational awareness but beyond that is beyond me.
My own daughter was very nearly kidnapped in front of me 6 years ago and if she hadn't been situationally aware and a good runner, I'd have lost her - and yes, it was black man who tried to grab her.
I learned SA reading LTC Jeff Cooper, Masada Ayoob, and the like. Never fired or brandished a concealed carry weapon, but I’ve brought one to closer readiness in a car a time or two.
“Head on a swivel all day long.”
That is the key, not just for us to keep an eye out, but to let the n’er-do-wells know someone is watching, just keep moving along.
The racist crap is the broad brush strokes that paint all or a majority of all black Americans as being violent, or various other comments.
Not in the least.
Luckily, those who really are a danger are easily recognized if you retain situationally aware, by their dress and manners.
I don't know why his phenomenon exists, but it is there.
Did Jesse Jackson really say this? I can’t picture it.
A handful of times now I have tried an immediate lesson on young ladies coming out of Walmart. Faces and eyes glued to their screen. About 10 feet away I look over there heads at the sky, fake a ducking action and semi-shout “look out!” While raising an arm over my head. The momentary look of panic is priceless. Usually followed by a “what a Clymer” look of pure hatred from them as I Saunders off cackling like a madman.
Self preservation.
Chris Rock certainly knows the difference between black people and these kinds of people.
The percentages though, are off the charts bad. Your “all or a majority” here has to carry a heavy burden.
At some point long ago, “all or a majority” of everyone else stopped looking at statistics or trying to pick the fly-schit out of the pepper. They don’t want anything to do with any of it. See how that works?
You are virtue signaling here.
That is very dangerous in the real world.
Everyone knows it.
Only some people are willing to talk about it.
Situational awareness is about measuring risk.
Risk is an estimate—never perfect—but still important.
The fact that there are decent law abiding black people is ridiculously irrelevant to this discussion.
As a matter of fact, Jesse followed-up later saying how it’s the only quote of his that the right-wing uses.
