A man in Austria was charged in the death of his girlfriend after leaving her behind, in a case testing ideas of freedom and responsibility in the mountains.

A distant webcam captured the moments the couple’s hiking trip started to unravel.
The pair, a boyfriend and girlfriend, were nearing the summit of Grossglockner, the tallest mountain in the Austrian Alps, when their lights appeared on its dark peak.
Around midnight, the man said, his girlfriend was struck by sudden exhaustion and could not continue. He said the two made a contentious, if not uncommon, decision: He would leave her behind and continue alone to find help.
Hours later, he was out of harm’s way, and the woman was dead. Rescuers found her frozen body later that morning not far from the summit, officials say.
Now, nearly a year later, the authorities have accused the man of making a series of mistakes that led to his girlfriend’s death, charging him this month with gross negligent manslaughter.
The unusual case has roiled the mountaineering community and could have ramifications for Austria’s large alpine tourism industry. Mountaineering in Austria has surged in popularity in recent years, and experts say underprepared visitors are taking more risks and accidents are reaching record highs.
The case has also provoked a broader debate in Austria, as questions of personal responsibility collide with a long-established legal tradition that requires people to protect others and avert danger.

I have it, and it never completely goes away. I’ve had it for 45 years as of last September.
Looking it up gives this.....
Genesis 3:8-13 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
On the contrary, Eve blames the serpent but Adam first blamed Eve and then God. He got a twofer blame-shift in, in one sentence.
Nice try to vilify women but it failed spectacularly.
FWIW, sin entering the world is attributed to Adam by God, not attributed to Eve. (Romans 5:12-21)
If those actions are true, he is beyond negligent.
That does sound outright deliberate.
I've seen people walking around town in NY in a snowstorm in shorts and a t-shirt, when the temperature is in the 20's.
I guess they're trying to prove how tough they are.
We see that here. It’s mostly kids. They’re waiting for a school bus in the morning, and it’s 25 degrees, and they have a t-shirt on. Where are the parents? That’s what I always wonder.
These were adults, granted 20 something males, nevertheless, adults.
the other thing I see that drives me nuts is parents out shopping with the kids, it’s snowing, the parents have winter coats on and the kids are just in long sleeve t-shirts or at more a hoodie.
WTH is wrong with parents who don’t/won’t dress their kids appropriately? If it’s cold enough for me to need a coat as an adult, the kids most certainly do and the adult should act like the parent they are and MAKE the kid wear a coat, hat, and gloves.
....at most a hoodie.....
Time to call it a night...
Grossglockner was my first wife’s maiden name, so I have a sort of mixed reaction to this story. 😏
That’s the truth.
Not all the way down the mountain. Just to a sheltered area protected from the wind. The wind is a big enemy because it greatly increases heat loss. I have no idea how fart they were above the tree line and they were exposed to tough winds though they die down a lot at night. The tree line is probably at 9,000 feet so it would have been a tough slog getting her that far down, no doubt.
But to,leave her there to die with zero chance of survival? You would pin a medal on that man? You are heartless.
Same thing probably happened to Ötzi and his girlfriend except the other way around. She left him to go get help.
Hansel, could we not go in the summer perhaps?
No Gretel, we must summit today, the views are to die for.
Plus Trump and Netanyahu.
Dead right.
Years ago we would make two trips a year to high country backpacking and climbing fourteeners. I was in great shape back then but one trip I got altitude sickness even though we were not all that high. Nobody else suffered. It is a very sick sick.
Since men dont owe women help or survival, I’m not sure where you get “heartless”. It has nothing to do with emotions, it was an every man for himself situation. If it was a man who died up there you’d be fine with it, so spare me your double standards.
The fact is this is a stark example of men’s superiority in a state of nature. It is a hearty slap in the face of feminist BS, and should be taught to every woman how her survival absolutely depends on men, every day of her life.
Hate to tell ya, but if it was me vs women in a no space left in the lifeboat situation - at least one of them is going in the water. Women and children first my ass.
Shhh... don't you know nothing is ever their fault?
Dopes, both of them.
100% right. Lifetime would air it
