I found most of the movie to be rather dull. No subplot. Completely linear. No real payoff in the end. Not much of an antagonist. The only thing I remember is the lead playing with his mashed potatoes to make a Devil’s Mountain model. zzzzzzzz

Resist. When Spielberg had a go with a segment of the Twilight Zone Movie, he completely inverted the meaning of “It’s a Good Life” because of his Rousseauian notion of children being noble savages. Just las we still don’t know the true intentions of the aliens in Close Enconters, it’s only a matter of time before Anthony Fremont wishes the teacher into the cornfield, snaps her brain, or turns into a marionette

This is the FOURTH movie from Spielberg that is about aliens.

I like his work, but come on, are there no original ideas anymore? Are we just going to keep reusing template storylines and rewrite them?

Williams is a genius. I was surprised he came out of retirement to do another one.

Oh it was terrible. It wasn’t until much later did I realize he was making a religious movie sold as a scifi movie. It’s a retelling of St. Paul without the Grace.

1. Roy gets hit with a beam of light in his truck, parked at a railroad crossing.
2. He is transformed and compelled to give up the life he had before.
3. Instead of Mt Sinai, Spielberg substitutes “Devils Tower” to receive otherworldly revelation.

And of course his new alien movie shows a crucifix and a nun giving a lecture on the vastness of the universe. He might have changed, but his agenda hasn’t.

Unfortunately, when John Williams passes on, that’s pretty much the end of the beautiful movie scores. I don’t think the rappers will take up the slack.
