Funny how most of us never realised the deep pain and suffering Rob Reiner was going through because of his son. Didn't even know he had a son, let alone a drug addict son. The nature of the knife wounds were brutal. Who TF slashes his own dad's throat with a knife? Terrible.

... one of the parents watched him kill the other one

I keep hoping one was a snorer so they slept apart and it was all quiet...

Very unlikely, I know. I can't help but wonder whether they considered getting guns, as so many rich people do even if they "don't believe in them."

Yes, its a tragedy

I bet Reiner was a kind, gentle and loving father, so its difficult to imagine how this could happen.

He likely only gave his strict moral condemnation, carping, megalomania and denunciations to Trump and conservatives.

My guess is that Nick was subjected to serious mental abuse from his father as a child. Before Trump then Rob would have needed someone else to abuse.

B-I-N-G-O - paranoid schizophrenics go from being manageable/seemingly safe to committing murder and mayhem in a flash. That is why being around them is so risky. In a second, they come to believe that people are conspiring against them and must be killed. And you never know when that turning point will be reached.

Oftentimes, the mental illness and addiction mask each other. Typically, an addict/alcoholic never gets sober enough for there to be a clear diagnosis of the mental illness aspect. If there is a commitment to rehab that last long enough, the problem can be decomposed.

It’s a mess to be sure, and a tragedy for the family.

I must say that I do appreciate DJT’s comments. At first, I thought he shouldn’t have addressed it - but then, if you let people get away with delusions and deliberate untruths just because they are familiar and have easy media access, that’s not right. Reiner said and supported a lot of polemical political messaging that he must have known was not true. That lack of integrity is not mitigated by a tragic death.

But the Media wants us to believe Hollywood Actors are great outstanding people. Their virtues are Godly?

That’s my opinion, too. Glossing over serious truths doesn’t do anybody any favors.

Typical result of seeing psychiatrists. You fools will never learn.

Robin Williams saw psychiatrists and he was given drugs which addled his mind and he complained that he could not be funny anymore. He hanged himself.

Following true FR tradition, I didn’t watch the video before commenting :/

But I have this to say: Yes, having a mentally ill family member is a real nightmare! I have not gone through this terrible experience personally, but Freepers who have have commented here about it, and I know know people who have gone through it. Anyone who read about the struggles of the family to get help for the schizophrenic guy who shot Gabby Giffords knows at least something about it.

There is just no way for family members to.help them. After we closed the mental hospitals and changed the laws back in the 70s and 80s, relatives of the mentally ill have had no recourse. You can’t force them into treatment, and even in the rare cases of a particularly bad episode, they only keep.them for 72 hours, then dump them back on the street.

A goodly portion of the drug-addicted homeless are mentally ill people who are self medicating with street drugs (which of course only makes tgem worse off, but hey, they’re mentally ill and no way to convince them of that).

I’ll get flamed for this, but there’s also the problem of cannabis-induced schizophrenia. The potheads of FR are gonna holler, but there’s fairly solid research indicating that cannabis can trigger schizophrenia in the genetically susceptible.

We could learn a little something from this tragedy. Like how our mental health system is really, really broken. How it would be more humane (and cheaper!) to get the mentally ill and addicts into treatment rather than spending billions on “The Homeless Industrial Complex” that solves nothing and running the mentally ill through our courts (very expensive!) and jails multiple times. Not to mention making our streets cleaner and safer.

It’s a terrible problem that affects us all, but for some reason nobody talks about it, least of all our useless politicians.

Additional.comment: Whoa, lots of mean-spirited keywords added here. FR isn’t what it used to be. :(

Reiner had four children, and from what I’ve read/heard, the other three grew up normal. This was just a troubled kid.

Ah yes. The old “guns for me but not for thee” syndrome common of arrogant leftists.

He went into drug rehab at 15, which means he was using drugs at 13 or 14...where were the parents then? Making movies and doing who knows what.

The list goes on and on. Since Pharma controls the media these incidents are quickly buried with no mention of the close connection of psych drugs and violence.
