I didn’t like Mr Reiner but no one deserves what happened to him and his wife and possibly by their own son! Having a drug addicted child has to be a parent’s living nightmare. This is very sad.

Once a person becomes an adult it is all but impossible to help him (or her) unless he genuinely wants to be helped. You can't force an adult to get any kind of treatment, medical or mental health. You can't force them permanently into an institution.
The mind of a Director, is not the creative genius of the screenwriter. He did good Hollywood work, they were bad in the home though.
