Could someone explain to me, like I am 8, why we need data centers, centralized processing, and AI ? Why? Who decided?

In my mind the AI thing is total speculation on the part of those investing in it. It much like the speculation that occurred in the early 1990s on fiber optics. There is thousands of miles of fiber optic lines buried and forgotten. Fiber optic laid by companies that later went bankrupt for lack of contracts.

The data centers are different in that they are binging built to house all of the data collected by the various companies that want all of your personal data, from the metadata on your photos to the geo-location of your cellphone ever minute of every day.

That data is purchased by every company that wants to sell you anything and everything.

And so fool that buys something from. Amazon is paying for those data centers that drive up the cost of electricity and flood the night with light pollution.

My impression, owners of corporations and such are going to replace workers like crazy and make a hell of a lot more money.

Anything that would ‘grind’ the ordinary people into the ‘dirt’ so the elite can have the ‘pick of the chicks’ is a good thing!

The “market” demands efficiency to generate a higher return on investment.

AI will drive efficiency like literally, nothing before. The impact on manufacturing and logistics will rival the Industrial Revolution. This will result in reduced expenses and higher profits.

........
How? This is all smoke and mirrors. Things are going to be wonderful and pink!

Big Data. Gates and the others who were pushing climate change and population control. Now they realize that computers are going to need more and more energy, so bye-bye climate change.

Consider too: decades of factories and other business fleeing to places with lower labor costs. Machines don’t get wages or salaries and don’t need health insurance. Why wouldn’t they get all the jobs and eventually take over?

Before we get too bent out of shape, consider the upside: AI will be a lot easier to understand and communicate with over the phone than the usual subcontinental Indians.

I think though eventually your laptop will have the LLM embedded on a chip, it will be firmware that will be updated twice a year. So data centers won’t be doing nearly the processing they are projecting now.

Just be hesitant about what you ask an AI in the same way you are hesitant about asking Google. Your questions are being collected, and if enough of them seem unacceptably uppity to the Powers That Be, well, one of their robots might show up at your house with a lovely parting gift. :)

For the shareholders.

People need to understand who runs the world. It’s a small group of “analysts” that work on the trading desks. They figure out what your company should be putting up for profits. If you fail to meet those expectations, your company will be crucified. Just look at Oracle last week.

The AI here is not ChatGPT, but rather the processing implemented in applications that run BIG systems.

It’s coming. And no one is going to throw wrenches into the big looms this time.

I’m very interested in how it will improve medical diagnostics. An AI would compare a scan or X-ray to thousands of others in minutes.

I think AI is already used in some types of surgery. It can have much greater precision:

AI requires huge processing centers. Those centers require huge amounts of energy and water to keep them running and keep them cool.

Every iteration of chip development will hopefully reduce those needs, but they will remain high.

The “markets” demand it. You won’t be asked (nor will I.) We are simply along for the ride.

......
.....

What markets demand it? Sounds quasi governmental to me.

Equivalent:

“You need this shot because it will keep you from getting ill and/or dying. It’s ‘safe & effective’ too.”

Clear?

How about “Enron was to electricity supply as AI is to content supply.”

Or, true to your request:

“People will come take you away if you don’t eat your vegetables.”

i.e., it’s all lies. Fabricated demand to boost stock futures (read “$$$”) where there technically is no demand.

This shiny penny, too, will tarnish, except when it does the disappointment for some will be life altering.

You asked.

Sorry you don’t like the answer. But in the grand scheme of things, you and I are irrelevant.

It’s coming. And its going to change a lot of things.

The Genius Act of 2025 is creating a new digital dollar to save the Petrodollar, which is under attack by nations trading oil in other currencies (e.g. Iran, Russia, Nigeria, Venezuela, etc.). Our elites are constructing a digital concentration camp for us and other nations.
