Trump is inconsistent with Christian principles’: why the Democratic party is seeing a rise of white clergy candidates
The Guardian ^ | 15 Nov 2025 | David Smith

Posted on 12/12/2025 7:03:53 AM PST by CondoleezzaProtege

He grew up on a farm in Indiana, the son of a factory worker and eldest of five children. He studied at Liberty, a Christian university founded by the conservative pastor and televangelist Jerry Falwell, and recalls wearing a T-shirt expressing opposition to the Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

Two decades later, Justin Douglas is running for the US Congress – as a Democrat.

He is among about white 30 Christian clergy – pastors, seminary students and other faith leaders – known to be potential Democratic candidates in next year’s midterm elections, including a dozen who are already in the race.

In Arkansas, Robb Ryerse, a Christian pastor and former Republican, is mounting a challenge to Representative Steve Womack, adopting the slogan “Faith, Family & Freedom” – rhetoric more commonly found in Republican campaign literature.

Ryerse, 50, said: “I joke sometimes that the two people who have changed my life more than any others are Jesus and Donald Trump, for very different reasons. Donald Trump is absolutely inconsistent with Christian principles of love and compassion, justice, looking out for the poor, meeting the needs of the marginalised.

James Talarico, a Texas state representative and a 36-year-old part-time seminary student who has amassed a sizable social media following – has become an unlikely standard-bearer in the Democrats’ 2026 Senate primary.

In a series of social media posts, he deploys scripture to champion the poor and vulnerable while castigating Republicans for what he casts as their drift towards Christian nationalism and corporate interests.

“Instead of posting the Ten Commandments in every classroom, why don’t they post, ‘Money is the root of all evil’ in every boardroom?”

Oh the irony that a casino mogul is one of James Talarico’s biggest funders/supporters. Miriam Adelson is banking on him legalizing casino gambling in TX.

You can't be a Christian, much much less a Christian minister, and be a Rat.

Their love of abortion, license, envy, divorce, laziness, murder, theft, fraud, pride, the gay life, the tranny life, lying, cheating, and misrepresenting themselves, all make it clear that they are not TRUE Christions but infiltrators and heretics.

They maybe trueblue Rats, but they must exclude themselves from Christianity.

Yes and he had the affairs *while* serving in office *while* leading the charge on one of the most aggressive faith based agendas in the country to boot. That’s what makes it more problematic. Doubtful he’ll pull himself out of the running. His (ex) wife should run instead?

Christian values include “render unto Caesar”. Enforcing the laws of the state or nation is rendering unto Caesar.

Trump is the first POTUS in years to acknowledge God, outside of the perfunctory “God Bless America” after speeches.

Pastors don’t necessarily make good presidents. That’s like saying Mike Pence would be better than Trump because he can quote the Bible better.

No we elected Trump to be president, not a pastor.

Context is key: if the economy were better and there weren’t such huge income chasms and a dissolving middle class, this wouldn’t be an issue.

You should always be wary of Pastors who deliberately misquote scripture. Their agenda is not Christs.

Preachers and women have no business holding high office with heavy decisions. That’s why you leave them both with the wagons when you have to fight off the Indian attack. Both think like women.

The church is now a woman dominated institution. Without it we would not be civilized.

Everyone has noticed that.

Someone needs to keep this Scripture in mind.

Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

“Should he win, he will either face corporate stooge John Cornyn or Ken Paxton, who lost the endorsement of “Texas Values” Christian organization due to adultery revelations. “

And the Democrat will still lose.

““Christian principles” ? Like abortion?”

That’s what I was thinking. Pretty hard to be a “christian” AND a democrap.

There is a marvellously distressing trend among my wife’s conservative Bible College friends and classmates from 50 years ago, to have abandoned the faith. Think of Talarico embracing the party of “Hail Satan.” I John 2:19 : They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

I notice a definite trend in the type of crap you start threads on. Anti-Trump. Anti-Christian. Who are you, really?

That is an observation, might be true, most likely is.

The next question is what do we do about it?

They have presented a lie, with a bit of truth. That sounds familiar.

So how do we counter repeated lies?

You counter repeated lies with repeated truth. You don’t focus on the lies, you focus on the truth. God kinda does that in his word. I used to be frustrated with all the repetition, now I know I need the proper repetition.

So what repeated truth should we counter this lie with?
