In a striking scene in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge asks two men raising money for the poor, “Are there no prisons? … And the Union workhouses? … Are they still in operation?” When the charity supporters reply that many would rather die than go to such places, Scrooge replied, “If they would rather die … they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

We watched the Jim Carrey animated version of A Christmas Carol last week and those exact words were used. They really leaped out at me, especially the "surplus population" part.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Lord, have mercy.

Thank you for posting this Morgana. My prayer is for an awakening in Canada that will draw the attention of the world and stop the advancement of the same darkness here. It probably has to start in the medical community…I pray for a high profile conversion of a doctor who turns away from actively participating in assisting death, and instead literally saves people from the abyss. Praying for this to happen even now. Just like with Bernard Nathanson, Anthony Levatino, and ex-abortionists. In Jesus’ name.

It is conidered OK to put an animal down if they are old and/or suffering interminably, but humans are of a higher order I think. I believe(and I suppose I could be wrong) that most people feel this way. I don’t believe that suicide, assisted or not, is an acceptable way for a human to die.
