A new book by Paul Holden, building on reporting by Matt Taibbi, Paul Thacker and others, documents that the “Stop Funding Fake News” (SFFN) campaign — which led to widespread advertiser boycotts and deplatforming of outlets including ZeroHedge, The Federalist, Breitbart, The Canary and others during 2019–2021 — was not a grassroots activist effort as publicly claimed, but a centrally directed political operation run out of the same South London office as Labour Together, the think tank that backed Keir Starmer’s leadership bid.Key findings:

• SFFN was conceived and resourced by Morgan McSweeney (now Starmer’s chief of staff and formerly sole director of CCDH’s precursor company) and Imran Ahmed.
• It was launched with undisclosed funding through Labour Together (later fined £739,000 for failing to declare donations 2018–2020) and fronted by celebrity Rachel Riley.
• Initial targets were left-wing anti-Starmer outlets (The Canary, Evolve Politics) to weaken Jeremy Corbyn and amplify the “antisemitism crisis” narrative.
• The campaign later expanded to conservative and alt-right sites in the UK and US, including Breitbart, Westmonster, Politicalite and ZeroHedge.
• Tactics involved publicly shaming advertisers, distributing blocklists to programmatic ad networks, and pressuring government bodies (UK Parliament, Cabinet Office) to blacklist the sites from official advertising.
• SFFN later merged into the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), which continued and expanded the same advertiser-pressure model.
• CCDH reports were subsequently cited by the Biden White House and Twitter’s pre-Musk trust & safety team to justify censorship and demonetization actions, including the “Disinformation Dozen” campaign.

The operation was deliberately presented as anonymous grassroots activism while being directed by senior Labour political strategists with millionaire backing, some linked to pro-Israel advocacy.
