Camp Mystic to open with new safety plan after 27 kids and counselors died in Texas floods

Camp Mystic has announced its plan to reopen next summer with new safety measures after more than two dozen people were killed in floods at the all-girls Texas summer camp earlier this year.

Twenty-seven children and camp counselors died after slow-moving thunderstorms in Kerr County caused the Guadalupe River to flood.

In a message to parents issued Tuesday, the camp said it is preparing for next summer's event at their newer Cypress Lake location, which is "completely independent from the older Guadalupe River camp…”

The camp said it has taken steps to enhance security at the location, including installing over 100 flood monitoring units along Cypress Lake and the South and North forks of the Guadalupe River.

"The system will provide early detection of high-water events, as it communicates for miles with other sensors using LoRaWAN (low-range wide-area network) technology, allowing campers, counselors and staff to respond and quickly and safely evacuate to an elevated muster station," the camp said.

Hand-held two-way radios with weather alerts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will be added to each cabin, and the camp's internet will be backed up with satellite internet, the camp said. The camp does not allow attendees to have their phones, and cell service at the Guadalupe camp earlier this year was reportedly spotty.

The camp will also add "higher-capacity generators to maintain power in critical areas," like the office and dining hall.

"These enhancements will also help us maintain communication with emergency personnel and parents in the event of an emergency," the camp said in the message.

If that camp is not going to be closed after so much death. I’m surprised they aren’t at least changing the name.
Oh well.

Camp Mystic knowingly built dorms for the children in a flood plain. I am shocked they have not been sued into oblivion.

"I am shocked they have not been sued into oblivion."

That is happening as we speak. I live in Kerrville.

“Numerous wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against Camp Mystic, its owners, and associated entities following a catastrophic flash flood on July 4, 2025, that killed 25 campers and two counselors in Kerr County, Texas. These are individual lawsuits that share many common claims rather than a single class-action lawsuit.
Details of the Lawsuits
Nature of the Lawsuits: At least four separate lawsuits representing the families of 20 victims have been filed in Travis County District Court. They are individual wrongful death and personal injury suits, not a formal class-action lawsuit, but they all allege similar instances of negligence
and gross negligence by the camp’s management.”

Whistling past the graveyard. Who would entrust their kids to these bozos after that entirely preventable disaster? This business is dead - it just hasn’t stopped twitching yet. For mass death on this scale, one strike, and you’re out. Amazing they’re even going through the motions.

Lots of housing is built on flood plains. Kids are taken white water rafting, where they run the risk of bashing their brains out on the rocks. The issue is not having adequate preparation for weather events.

Nature isn’t literally a warm, nurturing Gaia. It’s a malevolent, bloodthirsty witch waiting to pounce on mistakes made by any living thing that fails to take the proper precautions. Nature is why we not only build houses to keep ourselves warm, we build them to withstand its assaults on all structures.

This business is dead

It will be back bigger than before, and with the requisite changes, it is a great location.

Depending on whose estimate you're looking at, 30-40 million people in the US live in flood plains.

No matter where someone lives, you can find fault with their choice in terms of natural disasters.

"Why do those idiots live in a flood plain?"

"Why do they live where tornadoes happen?"

"Why do they live where earthquake damage occurs?"

"Why would you live where such a severe winter storm could occur?"

"Who would live where a wildfire could happen?"

"Why would you live where a tsunami could hit?"

"Why would someone live where a landslide could happen?"

And on and on it goes.

Natural disasters happen everywhere.

Good luck to the owners and employees. They are under the gun - the owners more than the worker bees, who could conceivably resume their seasonal employment under new management.

There should be NO permits issued for those flood zones. .

One could argue that the camp owners should have put these measures into place before anything happened. But, as is too often the case, it takes people dying for a needed change to take place.

They probably didn’t even think there was a danger of flooding at the camp. After all, the camp has been operating for a hundred years and everything was fine.

Hi exDemMom.

Camp Mystic is decades and decades old. It has witnessed catastrophic flooding before on several occasions, including one notable one in 1987 that took out a neighboring camp, killing several campers.

The owner (who died in the flood) used to be at the cutting edge of flood and disaster preparedness, and lobbying - same for the surrounding community. (He understood the geology of the camp grounds well and the risks.) Both he and local leaders dropped the ball even when the topic was brought up time and again for (flood alert et al.) systems to be updated. No one wanted to bother budgeting…Complacency reigned. And there you have it.

Ah, I didn’t know about the previous floods.

Yet nothing was done. So sad.

Maybe not entirely preventable, but the younger kids should not have been in cabins right next to the river, for sure. The local disaster response personnel failed as well.

Don’t build in a known flood plain.
