If I started a company to fill this manufacturing gap, the brand name would be Black Betty. It's a thinker.

All the recent moves in "circular investing" make much more sense now.

Maybe now, someone will write a computer language that can do a “Hello, World” in less that 100 bytes.

Oh yeah, you could do that 40 years ago...

There are some languages today where you can’t do that in 20 megabytes.

Anyway, with no RAM and all centralized AI, maybe we will go back to dumb (or at least dumber) terminals.

You will have no computing power, and you will be happy!

Well, the fact is, I’ve still got some of those on a shelf in what used to be the spare room.

I have been profiting from this recently by pulling old ram out of retired computers around the house and ebaying them for $$$

Great idea. I have some laptop memory modules lying around. I never throw ram away.

“Great idea. I have some laptop memory modules lying around. I never throw ram away.”

That’s why the bastards solder them in now.

“That’s why the bastards solder them in now.”

Nonsense. They would sell more if it was upgradeable.

Why RAM is soldered

Thinner designs: Soldering allows manufacturers to create much thinner laptops by eliminating the need for RAM slots, which add bulk.

Space efficiency: It saves space on the motherboard, allowing for more flexible component placement.

Performance: Direct soldering can lead to more reliable, high-speed connections compared to a traditional socketed connection.

“Micron’s Crucial brand saying farewell after nearly 30 years”

yep, they gonna focus on supplying a handful of multi-billion dollar AI and server farm customers ... a lot easier [and more lucrative] than supporting and dealing with a hundred thousand whiny home consumers ...

“I have been profiting from this recently by pulling old ram out of retired computers around the house and ebaying them for $$$”

plus, the RAM sold to OEM customers like Dell is higher quality than the RAM that is usually sold directly to consumers ...
