Unfortunately, Protestantism played a role. Not the Church of England kind, the more fundamentalist type behind American Evangelical Christianity. Is very anti-art, more concerned about the end of the world - than about celebrating the beauty (natural or manmade) in this one, demonizing art as idolatry, and artists as pagan, etc…

The onslaught of pragmatism and utilitarianism, the hyper-specialization of trades…relegating art as something indulgent, rather than essential…That beauty serves no real function of value; etc…

Because people decided that they wanted it that way.

Not regular people but sick little socialist members of the Fabian society and their acolytes. They did not want people to be able to enjoy anything. They wanted them miserable because that was what should be the lot of people who were not members of their faggoty little club.

This was a time that, because of mass production, even the poor could have a few nice things things to bring joy to their lives.

So they decided to "kill beauty". I am not exaggerating, they actually said that was their goal. To make everything ugly.

And although most of them are now roasting in hell their legacy of ugly lives on.

An anti-Christian worldview became prevalent.

Much of “modern art” stems from that view. It also tends to be anti-human.

Wrong term. “Revivalists” beholding to “revivalism” is what did it. A fundamentalist denotes adherence to doctrinal orthodoxy.

A good example of this is an adherent to fundamental (Salafist) Islam. They are not radical by any means. They are fundamentalist.

THE 45 COMMUNIST GOALS AS READ INTO THE CONGRESSIONAL RECORD, 1963

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

Ugly is cheap.

The government and the public wouldn't be willing to spend extravagant sums of money for streetlamps or building. Stone is expensive to chisel. Concrete, in comparison, is inexpensive.

Only the rich can afford opulence today. Unfortunately, they often leave their design projects to horrid artists trying to be new and different who only produce monstrosities.

“Evangelical fundamentalists: more concerned about the end of the world than creating* beauty in this one.”

I think that is right. It was absolutely the case that the Cromwell forces in England destroyed any art or decoration even in Anglican churches.

Also banned theatre. And the celebration of Christmas, Easter etc. and any displays or decorations. Banned Christmas Carols.

Banned music in churches.

There was just a real Taliban element with Cromwell and the Puritans in their attempts to impose a Revolutionary Society, in a total break with the cultural norms and folk ways of the people.
