Gen Z is hopping on planes for more than adventure—they’re doing it to have babies. A growing number of young American parents are choosing to give birth outside the U.S., often in countries with better healthcare, more generous parental leave, and cheaper delivery costs.
According to a new survey from Greenback Expat Tax Services, more than one in four Gen Z expats have already given birth abroad—and nearly two-thirds say they’re planning to.
Among all U.S. expats surveyed, 54% had already had a child while living abroad. Millennials lead the charge with nearly 3 in 5 reporting overseas births, but Gen Z is right behind—28% have already done it, and 63% are thinking about it.
Medical care quality, citizenship benefits, delivery costs, and leave policies ranked highest on the list of priorities. Around 80% of parents found the birth process more affordable abroad. Many also considered the long-term perks: countries offering birthright citizenship or dual nationality can give kids access to better travel, education, and global work options. Three in four expats said they’d pick a birth country specifically for these benefits.
Not everyone is completely sold. Nearly 1 in 3 expats said they’d consider returning to the U.S. for childbirth to guarantee American citizenship for their baby. About 47% said family or friends pressured them to go that route. But many are standing firm—more than 1 in 5 said they’d still opt for giving birth abroad.

Mrs. Montag was so much more comfortable than the hospital horror of #1.
What was the horror if you don’t mind my asking? The general experience?
When I watch medical specials, it’s usually other European or Asian countries (or countries like Israel) that are highlighted for top quality healthcare. Not so much UK. However UK still fares better than the US as far as maternal mortality is concerned.
“The US spends more on healthcare than any other high income country “but has much worse maternal health outcomes,” the report says. In 2022, 22 US women died for every 100 000 live births, compared with 0 in Norway, 1.2 in Switzerland, 3.5 in Australia, 5.5 in the UK, 8.4 in Canada, and 8.8 in Korea. About 80% of the deaths were preventable, the report says. It used data from the US Centers for Disease Control…”

America is huge with 350 million people.
9 million in Switzerland.
Okay. You and the kids have a nice life abroad!
BUT DON’T COME BACK. EVER. YOU’RE NOT AN AMERICAN WHEN YOU DO THAT CRAP FOR THAT REASON. STAY IN YOUR ADOPTED HOME.
It’s all in proportion.
We also have lower life expectancy now due to things like the opioid epidemic.
Some Americans get their exposure to features abroad while stationed in the military.
In 2021, she finally received her official US citizenship and took the oath. It was a long, hard haul, but finally worth the amount of money we had to spend to make it happen.
I pity anyone who thinks that merely having American parents automatically makes a baby born overseas an American citizenship. Without the Embassy documentation and reportage, it's going to be miserable when .. or if .. the parents decide to bring the child back to the US or worse, if the grown child later decides to try to return and claim US citizenship. In that case, they had better have kept every scrap of paper produced during that time.
The article is about GenZ going abroad FOR THE EXPRESS REASON of avoiding having their child in the US.
It’s moreso to take advantage of other countries’ better healthcare for birth giving itself plus parental leave perks. Not necessarily for permanent residence.
...and they’re NOT LOOKING BACK.
More unAmerican “citizens of the world”. Stay away!
Well as the kids get older, education matters too…While some countries are on the gender dysphoria bandwagon, others are the opposite. It’s understandable why conservative-leaning parents might feel more comfortable raising kids abroad for this reason alone.

Their choice! But what part of STAY THE HELL IN THE COUNTRY YOU LOVE MORE THAN AMERICA FOR THE REST OF YOUR CHARMED LIFE don’t you understand?
Go away, sunshine patriot. And STAY away. America is not your home.
In Germany my SIL gave birth and it was stillborn. The nurses would not let her up from the bed for 24 hours so she developed deep vein thrombosis and almost died. To this day she still has to wear compression stockings. That would never have happened here in the US. Good luck Gen Z.
Oh my 😔. Protocols for prevention of DVT will probably vary by country, but regardless the personnel present at the actual birth may not be the wisest nor most caring. And in the months leading up to birth, many OB/GYNS don’t individualize their care in the prenatal stages either to a woman’s vitals, to her risk factors etc…
I was under the impression that at least having a midwife present, she can act as a voice and advocate for the mother post-op/post-delivery, but maybe not.
These numbers are greatly exaggerated (clicks) but >>>>>>>>> gtfo and stay out.
Trump himself claims America’s birthrates need to be boosted - that’s why this stuff matters.

I forgot to mention that he took Brazilian citizenship, and did something else which I was never told to cause his U.S. citizenship to be revoked. I was not involved with his case, but with that of his son.
Whatever the father did, caused his son to be unable to get an NSA clearance until his father regained his citizenship. The son was hired as a senior software engineer. He was put to work in the mailroom until.......in 1990, he was the highest paid mailroom clerk in GTE Corp.
Bull Excrement!
“They are unnecessarily complicating their child’s life in the future, re: Citizenship...............”
It doesn’t matter where they are born if the parents are both citizens of the US.
