We've ranked these 15 albums in terms of quality, but we've also included the certified sales for each one. Those stats came directly from the Recording Industry Association of America's website.
While some albums — such as Metallica's Black Album — were re-certified as recently as 2025, others — such as ZZ Top's Eliminator — haven't been re-certified in decades. That means some of the albums on this list have sold more — possibly millions more — copies than their certifications indicate. Nevertheless, in the interest of fairness and accuracy, we're sticking with the RIAA's information. After the first 10 million it's all just gravy anyway.

Good choice, but i am more of a fan of For Those About To Rock. The whole album, in my opinion, has a slightly heavier sound to it than Back In Black, and i just thought it was an overall better effort.
I agree
Deeper lyrics with Haggar
Yeah, really.
/still laughing in “Crest Of A Knave”, too
This.
I had to look up the numbers for RUSH. “Moving Pictures” was their top seller at only 5x Platinum.
I’d put Aerosmith’s Rocks in there somewhere.
Not enough sales for Diamond but the album cover has diamonds on it. :-P
Only 2 I ever bought were Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin 2 . I was a sophomore in HS and in a garage band in the spring/summer of 1968 called Zeppelin Moored . This was pre-Led Zep by a few months . Bass player’s Dad had a bunch of WW2 photos and amongst them was one titled A Zeppelin Moored and the rest is history hehe .
I’d keep Boston but I 20/20 see your point.
Agree. It’s too easy to steer out of the proper lane here to grab clicks.
The Beatles launched a thousand pop bands, LZ launched a thousand hard rock bands. They are the alpha and omega of everything we listen to today.
Popcorn indeed.
Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Genesis, Ozzy, Guns ‘n Roses, The Doors, Judas Priest, Rush, The Who, Jeff Beck, Uriah Heep, Robin Trower, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Joe Satriani, Joe Walsh, Alice Cooper et al.
Did Jimmy Page put this list together?
“Sadly, the Who’s albums didn’t rack up massive sales”
IIRC they never had a number one LP or single in the USA. Had they moved up one week or backed up a week the release of Quadrophenia in 1973 it would have gone number one. Nope, they released it the same week as Elton Johns Yellow Brick Road and finished No. 2. Their sales never really had legs, strong sales the first few weeks then fell of the charts. Just saw them for around the 11th time in Sept. They were excellent. Hope a Live Video is released from the Tour.
