I don't know why illegal immigration is illegal, so let's get rid of that rule.
I don't know why immigrants can't vote, so let's get rid of that rule.
I don't know why 16 year old people are not allowed to vote, so let's get rid of that rule.
I don't know why first cousins should not be allowed to marry, so let's get rid of that rule.
Rules are there for a reason. Understand the reason before you remove the rule. - - -
In my life, I've found that Chesterton's fence is a very good principle to keep in mind, especially if you get a notion to "renovate" or "fix" something.
Fences have two purposes: to keep something in and to keep something out................
King Kong, 1933 film:
Carl Denham: Whaddaya think of that wall, Skipper?
Captain Englehorn: Colossal; might almost be Egyptian.
Carl Denham: Yeah, but what’s on the other side of that wall; that’s what I wanna find out.
Yes, this theory has application to many home improvement projects.
When agitated by those who want the fence gone while fully knowing why it’s there the logical solution is to throw those people over the fence to the wolves.
Yes.
If you understand why the fence is there,
but you want to remove it anyway,
you want to accept what is on the other side of the fence.
New Navy crewmembers sometimes chafe at some of the rules associated with shipboard life, and with the work that is done on an active duty combatant ship, daily and otherwise.
It’s not unusual for such a shipmate to even mock a rule or two. Or even breezily break one.
Then they learn the reason the rule exists. (Hopefully not learning the hard way, through accident or injury.)
“Ohhhhh! So that’s why!”
Best to let those sleeping would-be projects lie! Lol
That’s apply to many things.
Over my professional time, most of the recalls and major problems happened, when somebody suggested money saving improvement, by removing something from the process, which was there, but everybody forgot why!
We usually learned pretty quickly, and it was a quite costly learning lesson.
I don’t know why we have a staff senate... so let’s get rid of it.
I don’t why we have a faculty senate... so let’s get rid of it.
I don’t know why we have all these books for studies... so let’s get rid of them and use online resources.
I don’t know why we teach fundamental math... so let’s get rid of it and use Saxon math.
I don’t know why we have to study history... so let’s get rid of it and study basket weaving and talk about our feelings so we can make the same stupid mistakes over and over and over... ad nauseum.
I don’t know why we use traditional teaching methods that’s worked great for decades... so let’s get rid of it and use online learning modules that’s based in Scandinavia using the metric system and not that outdated imperial system.
I don’t know why we use simple motor vehicles that are easily repaired... so let’s get rid of them and use a vehicle so complex that a degree in computer engineering is required to repair them.
I can do this ALL DAY LONG.

Two thumbs up, Mikel
Thousands of homeschooled children are a testament to its value. My two daughters completed B.S. degrees in math by the age of 18.
Ha... Ha... Ha... SG-1... great series.
Fundamentals first then.....
Usually when people tear down the fence they lack a correct or full understanding of why the fence was there.
What they often have is a cartoon character version of why it was built.
Serious long dead men with great vision, knowledge and wisdom made the old rules.
The odds are they were a lot smarter than the folks who are tearing down the fence.
Saxon Math **is** the “fundamentals”.
Have you had any experience with Saxon Math? I am confused that you would think Saxon Math wasn’t the fundamentals.
