IIRC-—THERE WERE 2 WINTER FISHERMEN ON LAKE MONONA IN MADISON WHO TOTALLY DISAPPEARED YEARS AGO. ICE FISHING. CAR
DIVERS LOOKED FOR THEIR CAR WHEN THE LAKE THAWED-—NEVER FOUND A SINGLE TRACE.......
How many ice cream cones does it take to shingle a doghouse?
First submarine tests failed.
White oak is the proper choice for shipbuilding (and for wine cask fabrication). The "rays" in the grain of white oak block the movement of water in this oak. From the photos these appear to have been "Burn and Scrap" Dugout canoes. Burning/charring can harden the surface and reduce the movement of water through wood. If interested.....
Wooden Boat Building - White oak vs Red oak with Louis Sauzedde
why-us-navy-manages-its-own-private-forest.htm
snip...."The white oak tree might have been the most fundamental building block of the young United States -- literally. These giants provided the earliest Americans with shelter, built the country, laid the railroads that connected its coasts and kick-started an industrial revolution."
"From Maine to Florida and inland to the Great Plains and the American Southwest, white oaks were used to conquer the frontier, enforce U.S. foreign policy and kick the Royal Navy out of our waters. The USS Constitution, the only still-commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy that has sunk another vessel, is made from that same white oak."....snip (More at link)
Actually they did just that. They’d weight the canoes down in shallow water so they couldn’t be seen unless you were standing right on top of it. Leaving a canoe pulled up on the beach invited and attack from a rival band.
and by not letting the canoe dry out, the wood fibers would stay expanded and water tight.
Lake Monona, just yesterday:
"MADISON, WI -- A man who was pulled from Lake Monona Thursday afternoon died, the Dane County Sheriff's Office said.
Dane County deputies and the Madison Fire Department responded to the lake at around 2 p.m. for a report of an unconscious person in the water near North Shore Drive.
A man was pulled from the water and pronounced dead at the scene. Information about him including his name, race and gender was being withheld pending the notification of his family."
He was probably trying to pick out a good ice fishing spot, ahead of the crowd. ;)

Cool.
And you let her go?
There was a lake up near Kiel that I used to visit in the 70s.
On the far end of the lake where there was no access then, there was an entire old wagon and a horse skeleton you could see o the bottom in the spring before the algal blooms blurred it out for another year.
Not surprised, at one time Lake Huron was never a lake, as evidenced by so called “caribou corals” discovered at the bottom of the lake by divers.
