Judge Tosses Conviction of Somali Who Ripped Off Minnesota Taxpayers

(DCNF)—A Hennepin County, Minnesota, judge set aside a jury’s guilty verdict in a $7.2 million Medicaid fraud case Monday, leaving jurors shocked.

Hennepin County Judge Sarah West ruled that the jury erred when it found Abdifatah Yusuf guilty on fraud and racketeering charges, KARE 11 reported. Stunned jurors told the Minneapolis-area TV station they didn’t have much difficulty during deliberations. ADVERTISEMENT

“It was not a difficult decision whatsoever. The deliberation took probably four hours at most. Based off of the state’s evidence that was presented, it was beyond a reasonable doubt,” Ben Walfoort, the jury’s foreman, said.

I guess I did not know that a judge could overturn a jury verdict. Strange...I thought the judge was there to pass sentence after the jury said guilty. Or is Minnesota different? What happens now? Guessing the perp(s) can’t be tried twice for the same crime so they will go on hosing the people of Minnesota. Sooner or later, this situation is going to lead to BIG problems if it hasn’t already. An IRS audit is the most effective approach here. It is likely that similar fraud can be found in the tax returns of the perp. I discovered PPP fraud in one of our properties in Georgia. It has been referred to the IRS for action, rather than taking the former manager to court, where there are few assets to recover.
