GOP senator shoots down President Trump’s push for $2K tariff dividend: ‘We can’t afford it’

Sen. Ron Johnson rejected President Trump’s proposal to shell out $2,000 “tariff dividend” checks to Americans before the 2026 midterm elections, arguing that money should be used to reduce the federal deficit.

Johnson (R-Wis.) praised the idea during an interview with Fox Business Network’s “Mornings With Maria” Monday, but insisted getting the country’s fiscal house back in order was more important.

The payments would require approval from the Republican-controlled Congress, with Johnson and other GOPers indicating the proposal is dead on arrival.

It really is that simple - the federal government - the taxpayers for generations ahead - cannot afford it. The federal government has far too much debt now, and intentionally adding to the credit card balance, for any reason, is wrong.

Ask Sen Johnson his opinion on the continued use of baseline budgeting.

But we can afford that, Senator...?

It’s really that simple, do your job Mike and really cut the government, and give back the 2000 grand for starters. ✅

“I trust Americans with the 2k more than the government, pay it out.”

You do understand the federal government does not have the $2K gift Trump wants to hand out. No matter how much tariff revenue comes in, it does not change the fact that the government is running at a deficit, adding to the debt every month, with no escape from it planned at this time. So you’d rather the government go into more debt to give you $2K??

Why?

“After MTG waltzed away with $22 million but not before Jan 3 when she gets full retirement for working for a whole 5 years.”

She does not get “full” retirement after 5 years in Congress. Congressional pensions are prorated by how many years served, so her pension will not be nearly as “full” as a Congress critter who does 20 or 30 years. And she is not eligible to collect anything (her much reduced pension) until at least age 61.

And where is her $22 million?

DOGE dept. needs to be expanded, paid for by the elimination of worthless/redundant entities.

Problem is, swapping Republican and Democrat Presidents/congress every 2-8 years means...program makes progress, then dems (and a few reps) dissolve/weaken it once they get power. It never leaves enough time for it to REALLY do a deep dive into the corruptness that IS/WAS our current system.

“Trump is brilliant to buy votes with free tariff money. “

“Free” tariff money?

You mean the taxes U.S. importers paid in the form of tariffs?? You mean the price increases those importers added to their U.S. buyers, and the price increases those buyers add to the goods sold in the U.S.??; because that’s what it was, it was not “free”.

And did the tariff revenue change the federal purse from overspent to savings? No. The tariffs did not get the federal government out of having monthly deficits, with additions to the federal debt every month. No. Nothing about any of it is “free”.

“Why? “

Ask Trump; everyone says he controls the GOP in Congress and the GOP in Congress controls the Congress and Congress “controls” federal spending by what its legislation says is and is not possible. Oh wait; Trump has said nothing about reducing the debt and deficit or offered a balanced budget way out of it. But a few GOPers in Congress have, but Trump has not gone along with them or pushed the whole GOP to go along with them.

Trump will be like all the recent Presidents before him - pass the debt and deficit problem off to his successors.

I can think of a few things I’d spend money on to make upgrades around the house.

From yahoo finance:

And all the talk:

“ Greene’s net worth has reportedly increased from $700,000 before she joined Congress to approximately $22 million today, according to multiple media outlets. This rise is notable considering the salary of a congressional member is $174,000. According to stock trading data platform Quiver Quantitative, Greene has executed 450 stock trades since 2021, the year she joined the House.”

Tariffs on imported goods are a new revenue source paid by exporters for the privilege of selling their product in America. If the costs are passed on to consumers rational shoppers would buy American made, tariff free, lower cost products or do without. The “experts” predicted a trade war. There is no trade war. Trump is a genius.

Pogue Colonel: Then how about getting with the program? Why don’t you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?

On the one hand, I could certainly use the $2K.

OTOH, I’d like to see the deficit reduced, which will allow interest rates to go down, and possibly I can re-fi my mortgage (or, at least, it’ll help the economy).

OTOH, the gov’t is notorious (maybe defined) for it’s ability to find newer and more wasteful ways to spend money that we don’t have - so even if this is used for deficit reduction, they’ll spend it later on with no real permanent benefit.

I’m honestly of two minds on this - with all of the irresponsibility by our government over the last several decades, I’m not sure that it makes much of a difference either way.

To date we have not seen a downward tick in the national debt. We should arrest that first.
