Duffy Urges Americans to Dress Better While Flying: ‘Encourages Us to Behave a Little Better’

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Monday urged Americans to dress better a way to alleviate stress while traveling during the holiday season.

Since the end of the government shutdown, Duffy has repeatedly claimed that air travelers have become more unruly and agitated in recent years. Part of his plan to return to a more courteous period of air travel is to emphasize the significance of dressing well on planes. The secretary has lamented the trend of travelers dressing in “pajamas” to make themselves more comfortable.

During a Monday press conference, Duffy theorized how improved dress could result in improved behavior in the sky:

But I think we have to think about, how do we do a better job? How do we maintain some of that frustration we have as we travel this Thanksgiving season? Maybe we should say a “please” and “thank you” to our pilots and to our flight attendants.

I think — again, I call this maybe “dressing with some respect.” Whether it’s a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better, which encourage encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let’s try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport. I think that’s positive.

People who wear tube tops and pajamas do not follow the directives of the Secretary of Transportation.

This is one of the sillier wastes of time and effort by a cabinet secretary.

No it's not, it's asking to fly like times of old when people dressed appropriately and acted like civil citizens.....

Why would you have a problem with that???

Maybe if fliers used those criteria, all the in flight violence being recorded might be avoided

Using your logic, you obviously approve of people acting like the goops.....

The Goops they lick their fingers,

And the Goops they lick their knives;

They spill their broth on the tablecloth--

Oh, they lead disgusting lives!

The Goops they talk while eating,

And loud and fast they chew;

And that is why I'm glad that I

Am not a Goop--are you?

Get rid of the TSA joke and I might consider.

Being herded like cattle through a chute does not leave me in a polite mood.

Gov has made flight from a fairly comfortable experience into an ordeal to be suffeed. I will dress comfortably to undergo their circus.

Watch old episodes of “What’s my line” from the 1950’s.

I flew southwest last week. You choose your own seats based on your loading order.

I had a low enough number that I knew I’d have an aisle seat.

I wore a Charlie Kirk FREEDOM t-shirt so lefty would sit next to me.

It worked as well as my usual MAGA hat works.

“No it’s not, it’s asking to fly like times of old when people dressed appropriately and acted like civil citizens.....

“Why would you have a problem with that???” Do I personally have a problem dressing well? No. Do Americans want government guidelines on proper dress? Also no.

“Maybe if fliers used those criteria...” We’ll never know. His recommendation is lacking in specificity and would be unenforceable.

“Jeans and sweater is dressing up on planes these days.”

Same with a lot of churches.

Americans urge airlines to give us better seats and food too.

This isn’t a one sided deterioration.

Also that whole TSA thing and now requiring enhanced ID doesn’t make me want to show them respect either. Air flight is garbage now.

How about they go back to decent seats and a meal. They treat us like cattle and complain when we act like it. Too bad.

Airlines should treat us like they did in the 70’s and eventually, you will see improvement. Until then, keep stuffing us in smaller seats and no meal.

Replace sweat-shorts with regular shorts. It’s way too hot to wear a suit.

I was recently flying to Europe from the USA. White dude comes on to the plane wearing a wife beater.

I'm trying to think of the thought process of that individual. Let's see I'm going to Europe today, I think I shall wear a wife beater."

As for me, I dress better on planes than I do anywhere else. It has paid off. I get upgraded. Staff treats me better when things go south on delays and such. I dress comfortably, but no less than a collar, and never blue jeans.

Duffy is being a bit of a school marm. But this country needs it. Pajama people can continue flying Spirit.

the country might need it, but Duffy isn’t the one to deliver the message. Nor is any government official.

I’m just saying how it is, not prescribing the fantasy of a return to modest and proper attire.

[Since an earlier post, I double-checked: I actually have 18 suits, so clearly I have my own sartorial aspirations. But I’m a dinosaur. Americans of ALL political persuasions are way past “dressing for success.”]

With planes being assembled incorrectly, planes crashing, and fighting onboard, anyone getting on a plane today would be well advised to forego the suit and instead dress with tough gear, including fire resistant clothing such as a leather jacket. Impact resistant lenses and safety glasses are also worthwhile.

You would also be well advised to wear a body camera to keep your hands free when an incident occurs.

You might even want to bring a mouth guard.

I truly do not remember the last time I wore a necktie. It has to be over 30 years ago. I think I still have one somewhere, but I’d have to find a YouTube video on how to tie it.

If I really need to get dressed up, I have one of those long-sleeved T-shirts that’s printed to look like a suit and tie.

I traveled on a airline 4 times a year to visit my grandparents in the 70s .
I wore a coat and tie on all flights .
People on the plane were polite and reserved .
My father said it was one of the few places they never worried about me .
Then Peoples express began the rapid descent to hell flights .
