November 22, 1963. Assassination of our then President Kennedy. I hated to let the day go by without mentioning it, though it's been many years.

I still remember my mother's tears, the 3 days of the funeral, the sound of the drums. I was a kid. A different time. Worlds ago, now.

It seems after that day it all turned a different page.

Still RIP John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Btw, those drums, that funeral, briefly shown in the movie The Boston Strangler, with Tony Curtis, which I am grateful they put that in the movie, so it has been placed, I think as a bit of a memorial to the event.

When I am on that day, even though I do not know the date at some point in the day I come across it and it seems the black of the letters, the numbers stand out to me and my mind goes back to that day so long ago. Always brought to mind when I see the date, and unexpectedly so.

The memory of our old living room, the t.v., the sound of the funeral drums playing. Me in my young girl time, shocked to hear my mother’s crying, who never cried, my father’s voice to her, words I don’t remember. Previous memories of us as a family smiling at the news showing the Kennedy’s on the lawn at the White House playing games, the speeches that somewhat went over my head. John John under the desk. Memories of my family smiling at those sweet news stories. Nicer times. Thinking I should not ask what could my country do for me but to see what could I do for my country. Being proud I was an American.

That day and the feeling of loss I was unfamiliar with. A bit confused about what it meant. I think even though so much time has passed still that day comes back to me when I see that date. The kids at school crying when we were sent home, hearing lockers slamming as they sobbed. I was in jr hs but we were temporarily housed in the h.s. Sharing the h.s. With the older kids while our school was being built. The older kids felt it. I was only a witness to it, trying to get it. My older brother was one who felt it deeply. Had written Kennedy when he was alive about something. Admired him. Got an answer on White House stationary with his seal.

It was never about an invitation to remember JFK. It’s a personal tragedy I can’t undo.

I guess it’s like what they say of the Civil War. How after it was not ‘over’ but thought about, talked about for years. They went through more than I did but I get it.

One of my earliest memories is my mother saying “well, I’m voting for Nixon “.

This drum cadence by Henry Purcell impressed me years ago...

I was watching the NBC coverage of the day of the assasination. The newsmen at the desk were blaming it on “extreme right-wingers” until the facts proved otherwise.

Nothing in the media has really fundamentally changed in 62 years.
