Commentator on Jack Smith Probe: ‘We shouldn’t lose focus over who directed Arctic Frost’

A political commentator for NonLib Take says getting to the bottom of the Arctic Frost controversy must reveal who ordered telecom companies to give up phone records for Jack Smith’s investigation of President Trump.

Arynne Wexler, in a post on X, said the central issue is to identify who authorized the subpoenas targeting Republican lawmakers, asking, “But is this really about Verizon? They were one of the multiple telecom companies threatened by court order,” said Wexler. “We shouldn’t lose focus over who directed Arctic Frost. Jack Smith and Judge Boasberg directed this overreach – everyone should know their names.”

Arctic Frost is the code name for Special Prosecutor Jack Smith’s FBI investigation into alleged efforts by Donald Trump and his supporters to contest the results of the 2020 election.

Documents obtained by Senate Judiciary oversight show that roughly 197 subpoenas were issued by Smith’s Arctic Frost team, targeting more than 400 Republican individuals and entities and raising concerns that the Biden administration weaponized federal law enforcement against its opponents.

Among those targeted were staff, grassroots groups and lawmakers, including at least 10 Republican Senators, whose metadata–including numbers dialed, duration and location–was sought by Arctic Frost investigators.

According to DC Newsline, AT&T reportedly pushed back on demands for congressional phone records and refused to comply while Verizon provided data linked to a dozen cell numbers linked to GOP lawmakers.

This has led to claims of an unprecedented surveillance dragnet from Republicans in Congress.

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) has added his voice to Wexler’s in demanding accountability for those who ordered the surveillance.

Scott told Attorney General Pam Bondi in an October letter that efforts to target his cell phone records were “secretive surveillance of Congress” and a “violent assault on our constitutional separation of powers.”

Scott also sent a letter to the CEO of Verizon seeking full disclosure of what data was turned over and urging maximum transparency as Congress investigates further.

“ Scott also sent a letter to the CEO of Verizon seeking full disclosure of what data was turned over and urging maximum transparency as Congress investigates further.” Why aren’t there public hearings to interrogate the CEO of Verizon as to who and why they agreed to turn over this information, and demand penalties on Verizon including a year long reduction in all Verizon customers billing by 25 %. Hit Verizon hard for this breach of privacy. This would make them think twice about repeating these disclosures and would demonstrate to those politicians customers that they are acting on behalf of all their constituents, not just as a benefit for themselves.
